what ammo do you like for .22?
Hey guys, I am looking for opinions on .22 rimfire ammo. I am using winchester super X's now and like the accuracy but I am not real happy with the results on gophers. I like to see them opened up. I have used yellow jackets that seemed good but I had quite a few miss-fires. Stingers procduce good results but they don't seem very consistent. I would like a combination of explosive results and consistent accuracy.
thanks folks
p.s. I am using ruger 77/22 bolt action rifles.

I like using cci quick shoks..... or now they are called segmented hollow points. This ammo has the speed of the stingers but does alot more damage. At gophers out to 75yards hit with these look like it was hit with my 17hmr using v-maxes. They work and group well in my .22 when it does work that is.. Time for a new one... Cz452 here i come.

What's the price like on those quick shoks, similar to stingers? Any idea if wholesale in Lethbridge stocks them? I would like to give them a try.
thanks

i believe they are the same price as the stingers..which is pricey compared to like the federal bulk pack haha...i usually take one box of 50 of me when i head out....and savor each shot..then switch to blasting away with bulk ammo haha.

CCI mini-mags ( I can't find them anywhere) if I feel like spending some money or Winchester Dynapoints (Bulk @ wal-mart) if I want good bullets for cheap.

Wolf MT
WOLF MT (match target) groups best for my rifle.
But is very hard to find.
If anyone here knows where to get Wolf MT
in AB or BC, please drop me a PM.
For practice, Winchester X-pert 36gr hp (500 box at Cdn Tire) is great value - very few duds, reasonable grouping.

22 ammo
Buy a box of each and shoot them all on a target. Each rifle has a favorite or a couple mine shoots the best with Rem Subsonics and the old win superspeed.

I use Federal Game Shok hp's and like 'em. Seem to work well. Haven't had any mis-fires that I can recall.

I agree with Dick. Different ammo works well in different rifles. My 10/22 for some reason HATES any Federal ammo but works well with CCI and winchester. Trial and error.

i don't think the OP is asking what ammo works well in his or your gun...he wants to know which ammo opens up gophers.....

I went with CCI Velicitors in my .22 because the match grade chamber does not allow the longer case of a Stinger to be used. They do a real good number on gophers and it has proven to be the most accurate round in this rifle. On a good day I can keep 5 rounds under 1/2 inch (50m) which has been better than any target ammo I have tried. Been really happy with results of bullet expansion......

+! for the quick shocks. The Stingers are actually a bit faster but the non-fragmenting hollow point is not as explosive on gophers. 17 HMR2 are about the same price as the 22lr quick shocks, $5.65 at Canadian Tire, and are quite a bit more explosive than the QSs.
Winchester X-Pert 36 grain hollowpoints at $1.60 a box is about the least expensive, good shooting 22LR that is readily available. Out to 100 yards, it kills gophers dead, but it doesn't mistify them. As someone else said, for explosive results the 17 HMR at $14 a box or the 22 Hornet with 35 grain V-max, $19/25 factory or reload them for $12.00 per 50, will both vaporise gophers far better than any 22 LR, especially as you get further out. Only draw back, like everything else is cost.

I'm hitting them great with winchester super X's but I'd like to see more carnage! You quick shok users getting good groups with them? I did have some yellow jackets that worked great but one of my 77/22's had quite a few missfires with them. I should probably give it a good clean but I've shot it quite a bit since then with winchesters and have'nt had a problem. I like the results from stingers but I was having to many fliers for my likeing. Thanks for the advice guys. I'll pick up a variety and try them.

and the OP seems to know that...and seems to be hitting them just fine but wanted opinions on results of different ammo on gophers.......and shooting on paper tells you nothing about what it will do to a gopher.
graham...i get ok groups with the QS's..i do find they shoot a little flatter than the federal bulks.....so i either have to adjust my scope in the field or aim a bit different.......but in all honesty..they are a nightmare for gophers....if ya want them to really open up....they are awesome at it. you just feel it in your wallet when you miss hahaha.

Yellow Jackets
Yellow Jackets
They may not win any target matches but they sure do a number on the gophers!

Through several rifles, I have found the CCI Velocitors to be the most consistent for accuracy and velocity.

I have tried a few different kinds, and I LOVE the CCI STINGERS
do the job and great accuracy. Federals are fun but expensive

The 40 Gr. Winchester power points that come in the red box at Wallyworld is what I use. They make a pretty good WHUCK when they hit and they do a decent job tearing up a gopher.
Bigbadjohn,
I don't think that there are any 50 Gr bullets avaliable in a 22 LR, at least that i'me aware of anyway. The heaviest READILY availiable LR. is 40 Gr. There is a 60 Gr.round that we cannot get here in Canada made by a company called Aguila. 50 Gr'ers might be in 22 mag,I don't have one of those so i am not sure.
