Default Scoped and ready to go! Custom 260 Imp

I got back my new project rifle from the gunsmith.....things are coming together nicely.

Picked up a Defiance Rebel action from a member here, along with some other goodies. I had an HS stock that I took off of another rifle. I then was able to get a Jury barrel in 6.5mm for it that eventually became a 260Rem Improved. Talley lightweight low rings and a 6-24X40 scope.....fits together like a glove.

Premilinary fireforming using store bought ammunition shows it likes both 120gr and 140gr bullets (both shot MOA or better out of the gate, 5 shot groups). Picked up some Lapua brass from Prophet River.....great service and fast shipping as always. This barrel is a breeze to clean and fouls very very little if at all.

Goes to show that you can get a nice custom and use local resources for all your needs......support the local guys when you can, you won't be disappointed!

Thanks to all the guys who I pm'd and those who have helped me get this project on the go and completed.....I appreciate your patience

Targets shot using factory 260Rem ammunition from 100 yards away.

LOL...yah it kept moving that darn thing.

I probably won't be hunting with the rifle this year although I may feel compelled to try it out on some coyotes this winter....

Thats the great thing about an AI or an "improved" version. You can shoot factory ammo of the parent case (in this case 260Rem) to fireform brass, or you can load parent brass with a real bullet to do a bit of preliminary testing and for fireforming brass at the same time, or you can fireform brass using a "bullet free" method.

I haven't weighed it just yet but I am guessing in the 10-12lbs range, has a 26inch barrel on it. The trigger is a fine tuned remington factory trigger that is set to around 2.0lbs but breaks consistantly within less than 4oz each time its pulled.

That's a nice looking stick you got there and great groups to start off the project! I'm looking to do some custom work to my 30-06 after the hunting season, can't wait! Keep us posted on the progress

LOL....well you know being lefthanded and a bit different than most (I am sure that surprises some people). I usually add things like lead and mercury to my sheep rifles....this one I didn't have to add a darn thing

It is going to be used as a combination....all of the above that you mentioned . The rings/bases are really low profile maybe twice a sheet of paper thickness from the scope to the barrel, if that. Was really lucky when I bought the action that the guy selling it threw in these rings. The hole spacing on the Defiance is the same as Dakota/Nesika actions and finding rings and bases is no easy task....also a good thing I decided to go with a 40mm objective, anything bigger would not have worked.

Anyone else have a 260 Improved?

Just wondering what bullets you have chosen for both target and for hunting big game.

The barrel on mine has a 1 in 8 twist rate.

Thinking of using H4831 and Varget powders first....because I have those on hand.

IMR 4350 works fantastic in my 25-08 Imp. Using RP 260 cases and 120 gr partitions for hunting. .5 MOA

I have a 260 AI that likes RL17 and 120 gr Sierra Prohunters out of a 24" barrel at ~3070 fps. I tried a bunch of different bullets but it shot the prohunters the best, which is fine by me for a deer bullet.

Very nice Lefty. And the bolt is on the "proper" side as well.

My .260AI loves H4350 and W760. Shooting various 120's and 140's. It has a 24" barrel. I found I couldn't get the speed I wanted with H4831.

I find with the match bullets I am using the H4831 fills the case fast...to the point of a compressed load because I have a pretty short throat in the rifle and therefore the longer match bullet needs to be seat quite deep taking up case capacity. I might try Varget next.
