Well, point it up at 40 degrees vertically, fire a shot every degree horizontally, and who knows, maybe you would have hit it!

He has to hit it twice to prove it wasn't a fluke though.

But.....please realize....doing the math.... that target is about 1.1 MOA. So, excluding some of you real ELR shooters on here (Andy!..you are..) that is you at a 2000 yd target (how many have even done, or worked at that?) expecting to hit within a 21 inch circle. Pretty tough....actually extremely super tough.
Thinking of the amount of condition variation in that large distance, I think we still have to give a little credence to the accomplishment.
|
Agreed Darrel. I remember my 260+ inch hold at just 2600 yards because of the gale blowing that day.
Yes..this is quite an accomplishment. But 69 tries does stand out. Perhaps I should take my rainbow prayer comment back.

Just glad it was target shooting and not at a game animal is all I can say.

Why would it have been at a game animal? This is a ridiculous assertion. It is the EXACT same mentality that states semi automatic rifles and handguns serve only to kill people and inflict damage.

Well this encourages and believe it or not for many, not all, to take their so called long range rigs out once hitting steel at distances to try on game animals ridiculous as it sounds.
So that’s being said keeping it to targets is an awesome accomplishment in it’s own.

Nonsense. How in the world does a layman hunter get that much elevation in their scope travel? Come on.

I guess technically it's a 'World Record', but c'mon 69 tries?
In my pea brain that doesn't qualify as anything other than 69 wasted rounds...

Some people like to go through a 1/4 track as fast as they can as well.
ELR is about as from my wheel house as an inline muzzle loader , but I know fo a fact that many shooters consider my favorite shooting discipline (TR shooting out to 1K) is a waste of time as well.

Exactly now sit around a lunch room table and listen to the chatter, man there was and has been some gooders coming out of peoples mouths, some listen to reasoning others not, and I say the same thing come on.

So how do they get that much elevation? That was a question.
Maybe blame F Class for all this “chatter”.
Serious question. What was the last animal you spotted at 4.4 miles?

Guys will wear out barrels looking for a 1/2”. Spend thousands of dollars looking for a deer that isn’t even there and the list goes on. 69 rounds is hardly something that needs worrying about I agree.

^ I suppose 69 tries to break pole vaulting world record would still qualify as the record, when the dude finally clears the bar.
Bang away...

With all the crap going on in the world today if a few guys in the shooting sports get together and they tack a target at whatever range good for them.
So big deal if it took 69 or 39 ,the guys are shooters in a world where no harm is done, just plain old fun challenging themselves .
500 YRDS ,7800 yrds or whatever just get out and enjoy , practicing at any range is all good. Were all different in our capabilities, but were all the same in wanting to try in testing our skills and rifles ,all good.
Cheers

I honestly do not understand the animosity.
We could say so much about perceived accomplishments in the shooting and hunting sports.

Doesn't surprize me in the least, 1,000 meter mid range trajectory for .577 Snider or 45/70 Govt. Is huge as well, and the time of flight is off The charts too!
I remember reading in Precision shooting Magazine in the 90's ( maybe the late 80's )when the first 1 mile shots were made with a 308 Winchester , pretty crazy scope mounts .
These days with a prismatic adapter in front of a 30MOA
rail equipped long range scoped rifle shooting a big .338 bullet , we can get "way out there "a lot easier .
I still meet people at my range that think it is impossible to shoot a .223 accurately at 1K with a scope let alone with sling'n'irons!

Cat can answer that one as it’s well out of my wheel house and spotting game maybe 2 clicks out with bino’s and a sporting scope too
Reading the article there was a lot of hard work put into this accomplishment and well done to hit the target.
Congrats to the team!!!

Personally the longest shot I've ever made on a big game animal was paced off at 328 yards.
And I've never fired beyond that at the range.
So what the hell do I know?
I'm hoping all my shots are 30-50 yards type deal, kinda Elmer Keith logic.

I don’t understand why hunting animals at 50 yards has anything to do with shooting a target at four and a half miles? Which is what this thread is about.

Hold on. You said this would encourage hunters to do this. I can guarantee you that no hunter has the equipment needed on their optics to even attempt this.

It sparks up conversations that needs to have reality put back into perspective is what I am saying is all.
And sorry there are no guarantees in life other then death.

Tell that to Rob Furlong. His team uses Leupolds and there are times when we can spot trace on the river bette with my friend's Leupold spotter than we can with his top of the line Swarovski .
