I'm hoping all my shots are 30-50 yards type deal, kinda Elmer Keith logic.
And the truth is that most hunters should not be shooting past 300m, because they never practise past 300m, and many never even verify the trajectory of their load past 100 or 200m. And yet many of these people won't hesitate to take a 400-500 yard shot at a big game animal. I was testing out a friends new rifle yesterday, and it apparently didn't like the factory load that I tried. I personally would never shoot that combination past 300 yards at a game animal, yet many people would be taking Hail Mary shots at 500 yards if the opportunity presented itself.
As long as people are attempting these records at paper or steel, I have no issue with it, it's the people that try it on game animals that concerns me. In fact if all hunters practised on targets at longer ranges, there would be far fewer animals wounded and lost.

Wow, did this ever derail. The original posted article has nothing to do with hunting or animals. Zero.
Same connection as a new land speed record at Bonnyville Salt Flats has to do with your kids ride on the school bus this morning.....Zero.

ELR shooting is about the shooter, equipment and real-world ballistics challenges at extended ranges.

Agree. Still quite an accomplishment

I feel like there would be some sort of tighter standards? Maybe ? Not arc one in there after 68 spotters.

If the gun could always hold under 1/2" at 100yds, disregarding wind, drop and environmental effects on bullet travel, would that not equate to about a 38" group at 4.4 miles? If my cyphering is correct (subject to me guessing) it would be a crap shoot and blind luck to hit it to begin with, add in all the environmental factors, wind, trajectory, velocity variation and your playing pin the tail on the donkey to hit it. But it would be fun trying.

The idea is to figure out all of those variables so it’s not a crap shoot.

It’s the highest level of accuracy mixed in with a ton of precision

What impressed me the most is that they have that much powder, that many primers and bullets to even work at it. That is impressive.

I think 69 attempts would qualify as a "crap shoot" No doubt a long poke with lots of variables involved. So the next person does it in 68 attempts is that a "world record"?

I think they consider it just based on distance
The next guy I’m sure would try at 4.5 so there would be no disputes

I would bet that shooting a deer at 1000 yards would be a chip shot for these guys

Another thread off the rails by a comment that has absolutely nothing to do with this.
