Default F150 5.0l

Hello all. My son is looking at a used 2014 F150 with the 5.0L. I will search the net for reviews but trust this site for actual info.

I tried to search the forum but could not pull up any threads even though I have seen this one mentioned.

Pro's and cons on this engine from those that have one? Any issues to worry about/look for?

Thanks in advance

Had to get the rear differential on mine fixed twice. Traded it at 165K so can't tell you much about the engine other than the fuel economy was decent. Reasonable power for a light half ton imho.

We had a number of 2012 F-150's with the 5.0 and at least two of them had issues with the heads failing between 120-150000 km. The one was babied all its life, the other had a bit more experience, but honestly they were both looked after pretty good.

We ran a number of these as field trucks, and personally I wouldn't buy one after seeing the repair bills. These units were pretty rough service. If driven on mostly pavement I'm sure it would be a different story.

360k on my 2011 f150 and other than basic maintenance, spark plugs and a suspension job my truck has been pretty good.

Mileage is iffy. Roughly 14L/100k but I don’t really lightfoot it.

there are tons of f150 forums online, and they are excellent. Google that, and also look on facebook, also excellent for information.

My 2013 literally crossed 400k today. I’ve had it since new and it is the truck I use for work. Gravel roads, lease roads and bouncing through fields. I did have to get the cylinder heads rebuilt at 290k in the spring of 2018. Cost me around $5k. Other than that and oil changes I’ve replaced the water pump and did the brakes once or twice. It’s been a great truck.

I had a 2008 good truck no major abuse just lots of backroads hunting and fishing. Think all I had to do to it other than regular maintenance was the front end a few times. I run duratracks for rubber might have had a something to do with it as well. Sold it with over 400km on it. I now have a 2017 F150 zero issues other than an annoying door leak I’ve had fixed twice.

I didn’t find it had a great deal of power for pulling more than two quads and some gear. I pulled a 26’ feather light camper for a few summers with the 08 F150 that was a little much for it going up over swanhills to slave lake.

After 2013 the 5.0 is pretty good. I had a 2012 that was good, son had a 2012 that dropped #8. He picked up a 2015 5.0 and is very happy with it. Only issue has been starter, which we changed on the weekend, and it has to go in for the block heater recall.

I have a 2016 ecopoof that has been good, but only has 65km on it.

Watch out for cylinder #8 misfire just had to do the heads on mine with 240,000k. They have soft valves and valve seats and lose compression. my buddy at the dealer has done a ton of heads on warranty. My cousin did the heads on his a year ago with 200,000k and I’ve heard of lots more failures so consider yourself warned.

That ended in '12 didn't it? I think 13 up are fine but could be mistaken.

My work has multiple half tons and 3/4 ton trucks from all the big 3. In all we probably have between 200-300 trucks. Our fleet mechanics have nothing real bad to say about the 5.0 Fords. There was a minor issue initially and I can't for the life of me remember what it was, but it was a minor fix and only when they first came out. Since then we haven't had any issues. We do have more of the 6.2 Fords in the F250s and we have had nothing but good luck with them. Trucks are generally replaced around 180000-200000 miles. Most of that is not highway but rough primitive mountain roads.

Personally I test drove a 2018 5.0 and 3.5 ecoboost. Everything was the same except the bed length, 5.0 and the 6.5 and the 3.5 had the 5.5. I would have preferred the longer bed but I liked the power of the ecoboost. Mileage has turned out to be real good for a 4x4 truck and I have never experienced anything towing a 20' camper like this before.

I have a 2017 that just turned 120k - no issues ....

My decision was based upon the fact this is a tried, tested and reliable engine in fords line up with far few maintenance issues compared to the eco boosts. I'd say they are pretty reliable based on lot's of articles that I've read - kinda like the 5.3 in a Chev ..... unexciting, average power but reliable ...... and I'm ok with that. Good engine.

5.0l specifically, well I only know 2 guys that own one. Neither had engine troubles, but both have done rear ended twice. And both under 150000kms. Few other electrical gremlins, but that’s been the main problems.

Sorry haha, something autocorrected. Had rear end done. No accidents. Both had mechanics at dealership claim it was very common to their trucks

Really solid engine's and if you're like me and like boost, you can put almost as much boost to it as you want and they respond really well to large amounts of it.

A whipple charged or ProCharged Coyote is a stout, reliable engine.

My dad has a 2012 f150 with the 5.0l 260,000km and no major issues, shocks and oil changes and brakes. Oh and the water pump and he drives the tar out of it with minimal preventative maintenance. Pulls a 29’ fifth wheel too.

I have a 2014, 5.0L, last of the steel bodies in Ford Truck it is a standard cab and had to order it. But anyway to get back to the question you asked?
It has 87500K on it and I have NEVER had it back to a dealer. Had to put new tires and brakes about 3 months ago, never have more than 5 years on a set of tires or brakes, and normal maintence on it, put duals and a breather kit on it and it has a 353 gear in it. It has been a good truck and non that I would give up. Have had it Krown every year since new and I love it. It has been a good truck. Hope this helps.

Have a 2014 5.0 at work. Think the speakers went on it but no other issues. If I recall correctly, has about 180,000 km on it.

Really? I thought that was just mine. Had the rear diff rebuilt twice and the seal had to be done twice after each rebuild. Rebuilt at about 150,000 and 180,000 km. 2006 F150 with the 5.0l. Besides that it has been a great truck... after you learn to ignore the extra engine noise.

Default The tick

I got a 2011 5.0l has just shy of 150,000 km. From about 20,000 km it has always had a tick noise. Took it back many times only to be told it’s a 5.0l thing. Truck has been awesome for maintenance, just this tick. Wondering if anyone else’s has this.

Yeah that's the extra engine noise I was referring to. Been doing it since about 140k and it's at 196k now. Was also told something similar, not to worry about it to much.

2014 F150
If your just asking about the engine, I’ve had the idler wheel assembly snap off which I was told is a common problem.
The truck itself has had problems. Full brakes needed at 7k, rack and pinion at 2k, door seals constantly fall off, the dreaded fuel pump electrical short with bypass fix, most uncomfortable seats (xl trim) of any vehicle I’ve owned, Ford synch works at beat 50% of the time even with a new flash.
Off the top of my heads that’s what I can think of, I’m sure there’s more.
