30-06 vs 7mm vs 300

Which caliber would would you buy if you had a choice? Looking for a good rifle thats gonna last for a long time!! And what brand would you reccomend? Looking for hunting big game. One fellow reccomended a browning 30-06. Any input is greatly appreciated! !

Another vote for a model 70 in 30.06...may as well make it a featherweight. (they really aren't that featherweighty)

7mm would be a great choice in a browning , winchester , tikka or even the savage ...

Which 7mm, and which 300 are you referring to? There are many of each from milder non magnums, all the way to the ultramags.

My choice of which to choose would depend on which big game animals you choose to hunt, your particular hunting conditions, and how much recoil you are comfortable with..

Elk ..relax for once . ..to the OP ..the 7mm is an excellent choice in a variety of cartridges...7-08, 7RM for example..with 16,000 plus posts , Elk take a break

Without knowing more details, as to the particular big game in question, the hunting conditions, and how tolerant the OP is to recoil, any answer would be vague at best. For example a 7mm-08 would be an excellent choice for closer to mid ranges, or for a person that is fairly sensitive to recoil, but a 300wsm, or a 300win, are excellent choices if the primary game is elk or moose, and the person has the shooting skills to take longer shots.

I started out with the 30-06 , if you are into reloading you can go light for coyotes to heavy for moose . I have also used my 7mm mag love it too,now I have bought the 300 win mag and I guess this season will tell what I think of it.

are u saying the 300wsm and 300win MAG are better for primary elk and moose hunting ? If of course if he has the skills ..at what yardage do u suppose a hunter should adopt the larger calibre and cartridge..I thought shot placement was the end all ?

I am saying that if my primary targets were moose and elk, and if recoil wasn't an issue, I would certainly consider the 300wsm and the 300winmag.

Why ? what do they do over the 7-08 , 7RM , 25-06, 308, 7x57, 270, u get the point ? explain please ...

In most cases nothing.

If it's facing away from you and you shoot it in the ass, there is a better chance of your bullet blowing through the crap-sack and taking out lungs, heart, liver or front shoulder.

So the moral of the story is don't shoot it in the ass when it's facing away from you or at any other time for that matter.

Buy a 270 or a 30-06 and be happy forever

I totally agree , the 7-08 eg: is not the elk round for everyone and all shot angles...I like the 300wsm , 300win and the 325wsm

I can handle recoil. And eventually I will get into the moose and elk. I am new to hunting. Got my first deer last year. Just want a quality rifle that will last. Thanks for all the input so far!!

I just saw a Winchester Model 70 Extreme Weather in 270 WSM that just went up on the buy and sell forum that is a month old. This is the only rifle you will ever need if that's what you chose. Looks like a real shooter too.

270 WSM ..it's getting popular for a reason ...all the way from deer to moose and elk ..not sure about ammo for ever ! 270 win ...

On a broadside shot, pretty much any legal cartridge will provide a clean kill, but when the vitals are covered by a shoulder, or for raking shots, I prefer to increase my odds of the bullet reaching the vitals, by using a monometal bullet, in a more powerful cartridge. As well, the monometal bullets perform best with higher impact velocities. For those reasons, and given the fact that I can shoot the larger capacity magnums accurately, I choose to use more powerful cartridges. However, if you can't accurately shoot the larger capacity magnums, you would be better off with a less powerful cartridge, that you can shoot more accurately.

Elk ..you said nothing as to why the larger "more powerful cartridges" work better on larger game ...are you saying a 7-08 doesn't penetrate as well as a 200 grainer 325wsm.. you gonna hurt a lot egos here...does wound channel have any thing to do with this ?
