Default Hornady SST for paper but what to use for hunting?

I have been shooting some amazing groups out of my 308 with the 165 grain SST. That being said i am looking for a similar bullet for hunting deer and elk. I have heard the GMX would be similar. I also heard that the TTSX would be too but they dont have a 165 grain. Suggestions would be great.

No offence but what's wrong with the current SST? I've had no issues with them on deer/elk.

The sst is similar to a nosler ballistic tip, I'd go hunting if I was you.

I have been told by several people that they would not recommend them for anything larger than deer and that they are not a strong enough bullet.

Nice to see positive opinions about the SST though

In this sport you'll hear opposing opinions about literally everything. The only time you listen is if there is a unilateral agreement about a terrible product

SST's should work fine. The interbond is similar shape and same B.C so should shoot pretty close to the same. They are a bonded bullet so if you want to upgrade that would be a good choice. They are one of the least $$ of the bonded bullets as well

Thumbs up

Lol dont worry about using SST ... Its a good bullet. I use the same SST for my muzzleloader.. it can be a bit too hard on deer when its cold outside.

I would use them, my wife shot a moose with her 7mm-08 last year with a 140 grain sst, when we recoved the bullet from the opposite shoulder it was perfectly mushroomed

Girlfriends brother takes an elk every year with 130gr SST's in his .270. I wouldn't worry about using it on critters larger than deer. If you can shoot them accurately, stick with it!

Barnes does make a 165 ttsx as well as 168 ttsx for 308.

Hmmm. Better go with a depleted uranium triple hydro shock death dealer assassin 168 gr bullet. That will drop those hard to kill deer. Hard to find and expensive but they work.

SSTs are great, excellent performance. Thing to watch is to avoid the shoulders and big bones, Hornady reccomends the behind the shoulder shot and with good reason, use them as intended and you will be impressed

Dropped a 50" moose last year at 140 yds with my 338WM shooting a 225gr SST at 2800 fps he was DRT, shot behind the shoulder quartering away and took off the knuckle of the shoulder joint. Love the SST to the point I loaded 100 rds.

I've been using 123gn/129gn SST's in 6.5*55 SM for the last four years. Works amazing on whitetails and muleys. Shoot'em all year round paper/coyote/hunting.

All the shots on deer were one shot with good expansion. I've heard alot of peolpe saying they aren't good for deer but I had a really good experience with them.

Price is right as well

I tried Hornady superformance 130 gr interbond, nosler trophy grade 130gr accubond and HSM Berger 130gr vld hunting in my 270. All were about 1.5" groups at a hundred. This morning I loaded up some 130 gr SST's and had a .343" and .414" group. SST's is what I'm going to stick with.

Last year i took a nice bill elk and a decent white tail with the SST worked VERY WELL. I absolutly love sierra bullets, but in honesty Hornady has a winner with the SST. I say shootem!!

Used one this week on an antelope...200+ yards quartering away 129gr in a 260 "improved", bullet ended up under the offside hide....one shot was all that was needed. Perfect in my opinion.

Agreed, similar to a ballistic tip but a bit more robust IMHO.

i concur lefty, with the exception of the 120 gr in 7mm; the heavier jacket lets that bullet do way more than it should at 7-08 or 280 rem velocities, lee

They have TTSX 165 gr and TTSX 168 gr as a component.

use both 165 SST and Interbond in a 308Norma Mag..loaded to same ballistics.

the Interbond has worked as expected on elk the SST for mulies...encourage everyone to try them...I won't change out for something different...and yes the price is right!

are you using them out of the same gun? If so, was there a difference in POI and accuracy?

My partner put a.338 200 SST through a moose at 260 yards, bullet went through the spine just behind the shoulder no bullet recovered however the moose was dead soon as it hit the ground.
