Bases for Zastava m70

What base and rings do i use and a new Zastava M70 rifle? looking for 2 peice base weaver/picatinni type.

That is what I'm going to try. I have heard that screws may need to be filed. I'm just gonna have to try it out.

They will work but you will have to trim the rear screws or they will bind on the bolt and you have to watch carefully as some scopes may not have enough elevation adjustment to accept the difference in front base height. .033 inches (Usually the height added to the rear base to create a long distance gun but the effect works in reverse if you add the height to the front base) over a 6 inch mounting space is 20 MOA Using a 46 instead of the 20A will cause you to loose over 57 MOA of vertical.

That said most Leupold VX-3 scopes mounted on a 20A front base are very near the bottom of their vertical adjustment. The Leupold VX-3 has about 64 MOA of vertical adjustment so the 45/46 combo will work with the Leupold VX3.

I have a Zastava 300 win mag.

So I purchased a set of Sun Optics that were supposed to fit the Zastava M70. The weaver bases included in the kit have no mention of the base#, but the rear needs to be shimmed (a lot). Like 1-2 mm (or 0.039'' - 0.078''). So I looked online to see if they actually were the proper fitment for Zastava. I then bought a 55 (it's all they had at the local store), which turns out to be what I have in the rear. So I figure the kit is 20a + 55.

The 55 base I bought is a weaver official, and it mentions on the packaging that it may require a shim.

I looked online, and the thickest shim kit from weaver is 0.012''. So I would require at least 3 shims. I think that's a bit too much, at this point it's a problem - not a shim.

So my next guess is base 45-46, like you guys are mentioning on the forum. On the weaver bases chart, all the 45-46/20a-55 need shims. Did you guys have to shim? If so, how much? What is your caliber?

I am trying to get rid of the coke can shims I have, as the accuracy at 100yrds is as good as a pistol. There could be many factors (like the caliber vs Zastava's barrel profile and cheap stock), but before going into those more expensive options, let's get rid of all the home made solutions.

Did I forget something? (I did use some loctite, zeroed first with a laser, then @ 50 yrds)

Oh, and I tried a 6.5 creedmore from another shooter next to me to make sure I wasn't the problem. (I've been 10 yrs in the army and did some biathlon).

Own and have tuned a number od zastava rifles. First thing is bed the recoil lug/action and free float the barrel. Second, get some sellier and bellot factory ammo in 160 and 180 grain and see what you get for groups.

Use that as your baseline to debelop a better shooting handload. Have never jad one tha would not shoot better than one moa and most would do that with the sellier and bellot factory ammo. I have had to work quite hard sometimes to get a handload that will shoot better than that. They are among the harder guns to develop handooads for. No idea why!

@ wolf308: y2k started the thread, I just replied since I’m having issues with the same part. I am interested though.

@ dean2: thanks for the info. I assumed the barrel was free floating, but I tried the sheet trick, and it’s not. I will also bed the actions, as I read it elsewhere also. Finally yesterday I made a move on a barrel: 26in bull barrel. I’ll probably see my rifle again in september. I am sure bedding the actions + heavy barrel is going to take care of that magnum cartridge rub, heat and kick.

I wish I could reload, but my free time is rare and the inital expense isn’t lining up with my priorities. I will definitly get into it later in my life though, as I like to take care of everything myself.
