Default What do you think ?

I need a new barrel on my 7mm and I plan on going from a number 3 to a fluted number 4 and 1" longer so with this being said the bullet will have
( I'm guessing) another 200 fps and the harmonics will be a little different I would think. My scope has the turret system I think they call it the BCD turret (if I want 450 I turn it to 450)

Do you think with the changes I will need a new turret ?
How far off do you think it will be ?

Once I get it done I will take it to the range and see how far out it is from 200 to 800 yards anyway.

If you are expecting to gain 200fps by adding 1" of barrel, you will likely be very disappointed. All else being equal, you may gain 40fps or so by adding 1" of barrel. And then again with different barrel and chamber dimensions, you might gain a bit more, or you might not gain any velocity.

I kinda hope I don't gain any fps.
I really don't want to have to get a new turret if I don't have to . I just got this all together again to find out my barrel was starting to burn out a bit

How do you know that the throat is burned out? How many rounds down the barrel?

I got the gun used and had it for about 5 years or so I'm not sure of the amount. When it got cameraed the gun smith said it was getting close to the end and I would need a new one sooner then later and it had some pitting .
At 750 yards the groups have opened up to about 6".
At 200 yards the holes will be touching but it gets the odd flyer .

Maybe the gunsmith just wanted the work and it's not as bad as they thought ?
6" at 750 with some wind gust and mirage I thought wasn't to bad but I could be wrong

If a hunting rifle shoots 6" groups at 750 yards, don't touch it.

Really ? That's good news ... I kinda figured 3" maybe 4" groups would be the normal grouping at that distance .

A 3" group from a hunting rifle At 750 would be stupendous!
6" is still less than 1MOA and at 750 it's very good.

For a factory sporting rifle, 6" is good at 750 yards.

It's a Remington 700 from the custom shop . But I'm glad to hear this is probably not going to need any more money put into it ! This sounds like great news !! I was not looking forward to that bill.

Say I did do the new barrel as I stated before 1 inch longer and a little heavier would it need a new turret or would it probably be close enough to how it is now ?

You could adjust the powder charge to match the velocity that your current barrel produces. but that may not be the most accurate load with that barrel.

What do I think? Methinks your pulling our leg.

But a longer barrel is going change the balance of the gun a lot, and it may never shoot touching holes again....but it's your dime.

The decision to Re- barrel a rifle is strictly a personal decision IMO.
No one but you can decide when your rifle needs to get a new barrel.

Find a good 'smith and have the barrel set back a bit if the throat is the issue. You pbly won't notice the diff in performance and will save yourself a bunch of coin.
