Ha, hear be a Man that knows about Class, quality and history,
I just got one, Ruger #1. so I am bias of course.
But if you are intrested I happen to know of a pre 64, M70. 300H&H, dare to be different.
All thought its likely cheaper to buy a New model 70 extreme, (I have the.264 win mag, in extreme, very nice)
Everyone now days seams to like short and fat, Me I like tall lean and tapered, just like my woman, Go the 300H&H and 7x57,
Perfect reason's, looks, performance and nostalgia.

If I bought a 300 I would want the H&H too. Lots of history there and a cool cartridge. If I wanted something more than that then the Weatherby would get the nod over the Winchester. However out of the original posters question the 7 mag is the way I would go. A little less recoil than the 300 Win and no difference in the real world with performance on game. A big advantage if you ever need to buy factory ammo then it can be found pretty much anywhere.

I have, they are a nice stock for sure. I'd prefer to stay synthetic, or laminate.

I'm leaning heavily towards a 300 Win mag, with the possiblility of a 7 Rem Mag, but I feel the 7 is so close to the 270 as to make it not as worth while. I'm not interested in any other calibers except maybe the 06, and again I think it's too close to the 270.

My 3 choices are in no particular order, Kimber Montana, T3 Laminate, or an older Rem BDL, with a Mcmillan stock, possibly a KS.

I'm looking for opinions that are qualified, not just a get the 7 cause the 300 sucks. Chuck that means you as I know you've got alot of knowledge on this but sometimes have to be poked to get the reasons.

Thanks for the feedback guys.
I thought you owned a 35 whelen? Sounds like the ticket to me. Although I'm biased as I just pick up a beauty m70 in 35 whelen

Do you role your own ammo?.
if you do, buy the 300. Load it down to 308win Velocity loads for fun. Load her up to hunt, or not. nothing the 284" can do that the 300 can't beat. As per usual the crap in these kind of threads get stacked so high it runs up hill .
Buy a Kimber in 284AI, will do damn near what the 7mm RM will do with better burn/ short action. I seen a few on the Buy and sell here lately. Or buy a 300, don't like it, sell it, try another. No one can tell you what you can or can't handle but you.
Me personally, I use the 300wm to hunt everything, loaded up or down, very versatile cartridge.

Quick update. I've picked up a T3 in a boyds laminate, chambered in 300 win. Once I get it out to shoot, I'll post what I think. I like how the stock feels, it's there prairie hunter design. Not much of the recoil lug showing up, but it is definately making contact with the receiver notch, may bed though, or at least lift the recoil lug up a little. Will shoot it first as is.

I was going to say if you are a bit recoil sensitive, maybe a 7mm-08 or 280 or 6.5x55 Swede.

I see you got a 300WM with a laminate stock. It will be heavier and help on the recoil, maybe get a Limbsaver pad for it as well. You should enjoy the 300WM...I love mine. Bought it back in 1997 (Sako m75ss) and never looked back.

Stick with what you got, bigger animals with bigger cartridges? Maybe if it was going to eat you, crush you, poop you out a day later but for the animals you mentioned save the money.

Case capacity of the .300 H&H is just slightly less than the WM. So recoil is pretty much identical if comparable loads are used. Just because factory H&H is loaded anemic a hot H&H load will kick just like any WM. Load either cartridge down and they will be *****cats.

FWIW I load my .300H&H to send a 200 grain at 2950 fps. This outperforms .300 WM factory ammo and the recoil is just the same.

I would choose the 300 Mag between your two first choices in the OP. The 7MM is pretty close to the 270 in bullet weight range.

In my thinking the 300 gives you choices in good 150 grain loads to tame the recoil a bit. It offers 200+ weight range. The only real difference between the 7MM and 300 is the ability to use heavier bullets on moose and elk. The 300 Win Mag outperforms the 7MM at 175-180 grain bullets. Even if you don't hunt bear you might hunt in bear country and a heavy 308 sturdy bullet would add a comfort factor.

Full disclosure: I've owned a 7MM Rem Mag in a 700 and a 375 H&H Mag in a Ruger No.1 as my only magnum rifles. I never liked the 7MM and quickly sold it after a couple of seasons. It was a moose rifle and loaded with Partitions.
