Default How's the drive to Phoenix in the winter???

Thinking of driving to Phoenix at Christmas. What are the roads generally like? At what point does it start to get smoother sailing highway wise?

How long does it take in winter?

Thanks folks.

3 easy days if the weather is okay, some ugly mountain passes...can be done in 27 hrs. tho' if the roads are good, 2 drivers etc., etc.

As Hal says, some very ugly passes on I-15. But if you watch weather etc. three days is about right. Last winter we were snow and ice right from Nevada / California into Phoenix. That said most winters it does get better at St. George, Ut. Most winters it's fine, again just watch for snow in Denver, all that snow has to come over the passes ((Monida (7100 ft. ??) in Montana / Idaho, and again from North of Cedar City Ut. (6700 ft. ??) into St. George)) you will travelling.

Default Montana!!

Like Hal says, it can be terrifying in those mountain passes. Sometimes they close the road and if you don't get a motel fast you may not get one.

Idaho and 1/2 of Montana sucks in the winter...but worth it to get down to the desert.
I made it home in a Jan snowstorm from Vegas to Sask in a 5L mustang with bfg ta tires, so any "normal" vehicle will be fine. Just take your time and enjoy the scenery

Once you get over the Monidas Pass its smooth sailing. But it can be ugly. Keep it under 85 and the state troopers will save you alone. If you push it you can make it in a day and a half.

Driving this route is OK for Albertans, the problems you will have is with US drivers; it will get worse as you get toward Salt Lk Cty, and will get really bad nearing Phoenix. Good Luck.
