Default How many people are legally allowed on my boat?

Hey, does anyone know if there is a legal limit in Alberta concerning the number of passengers allowed on a boat? Does it only go by weight or does every passenger require an actual seat?

Doesn't it have a stamp or tag that says like 6 persons or 1350lbs or something?

I would think safety and common sense should come into play before legality. I think if what you're doing is safe that you won't have any legal issues.

Yup I think your right Kurt. There's a Transport Canada tag on most boats now that give the # of individuals and weight restrictions. Along with all the safety stuff like life jackets and such.

You're not getting contracted by the liberal government to help 'relocate' people are you?

My 16' one can carry 5 people ( according to owner manual) and has 5 seats ( I also carry 5 safety jackets).
Most of the time is only 2 of us.

If i remember correctly, the number of pers is based on each passenger weighing a notional150lbs.

If the boat is rated for 4 pers it will also say "4 pers or 600lbs"

I could be wrong as it has been awhile though.

Strangely, I can carry more people in the USA than I can in Canada! My boat is rated for 907 lbs passenger weight or 5 people by Transport Canada, and 907 lbs or 7 people by the US NMMA. Must be because people are so tiny and light in the good ole' USA. LOL It's 17.5' and realistically speaking, three can fish comfortably. More rods going than that and I get nervous.

Yes, that's a ton of buoyancy for a boat less than 2 feet long. LOL

Good catch on the mistake.

Not even going near the "three can fish it comfortably"

I looked into this last year and contacted the Canadian coast guard. The compliance tags are only recommendations in Canada. You can have as many people on board as you want, any size HP motor, and any weight. The only people who care will be your insurance company. Contact them to see what they will cover in case of an accident.

In the US the compliance tags are law and you will be fined if you are over on anything listed on the tag.Typically the numbers are a bit different then the Canadian tags on the same boat

You can have as many people as you have seat belts...

My boat tag shows a maximum weight and horsepower, but not the number of people onboard. I have 4 seats. I have a question which hopefully doesn't derail. When travelling on the highway, am I supposed to have my drain plug in or out?
