Whisky, had no idea there was so much to it.
Found a youtube channel a couple of days ago - all about whisky - with and without the E. Thought I had some understanding of it, but woefully not.

I think it's time to give scotch whisky and Irish whiskey another chance.
Richard Patterson. Master blender for Whyte & Mackay is pretty funny too. I've never tried Dalmore, but it's on the list.

Yes, there is a wide variation to appreciate. Good whisky - not the stuff that you mix with coke or ginger ale - can be both complex and subtle.
For a real eye-opener, pour an ounce of good whisky into a shot glass and have a sip. Then mix in a tablespoon of cold water and have another sip right away. The difference is astonishing.

Oh, I love whisky and never mix with pop. Either straight up or water, depending how I'm feeling about a drink. I've done the few drops of water, definitely changes it but didn't know why. It's the oils, so interesting. That youtube channel explains alot.
Simple stuff, the Irish put the E in whiskey.

I took a bottle of Octomore to my dads 80th birthday party to share a dram with a few who would appreciate it. My sister said that the only way she could drink that is if it had coke in it, I said that's why you're not getting any! Geez, some people. Lol

Look into Japanese Whiskey and German Whiskey. It might be blasphemy but I prefer those to Scotch, Canadian, and Irish. I like smooth rather than peaty though.

Canadian Rye Whiskey
There are some really good Canadian rye whiskeys which are copper distilled and aged in port barrels for 10 yaers. Among the best is Pike Creek

Never tried either. Japan is winning some pretty good awards for their whisky's.

I've a love for the whisky and it's should always be straight.
All things considered the world over makes good whisky but my favorites come from Canada and Scotland.
The cheaper end of things, I like Dark Horse and McLoughlin and Steele.
The more expensive Royale Brackla and Dalwhinnie.
Ask me again in a year and that'll change.

I'm a Scotch man. I tried a couple of Japanese whiskies and I was very impressed with their quality and flavor profile. Japanese beer, Hitachino especially, is worth a mention too...

Dalmore is good stuff SD, and a fine place to start. I started off loving the Highland whiskies (Highland Park is my favorite), then morphed over to the Islays as my whisky of choice...but have recently gone back to the Highland roots. Dalmore and Highland Park are fantastic, but if you have a deep pocket and want to try something amazing, see if you can find the Balblair 1990 (second release). Runs around $170, maybe less in Edmonton, but it is also a 23 year old, very smooth, and full of character. It may be my all time favorite, even over the Highland Park 25 year old that is 3 times the price.
Whisky is good. So is Whiskey....but don't forget to wash your hands before you try it. .

I have always liked the single malt highlands, but have never been able to appreciate blends or the peatines of Islay's.

Agreed. I am glad Japanese alcohol is getting more popular over here. Used to be very difficult to find. Now I have seen them at pretty simple stores like solo liquor in Calgary.
If you can find Rothaus Whiskey from the Black Forest, buy it! Ive only seen it while in Germany and max out my duty free limit with bottles of it. Really smooth. Won some awards in Europe.

Ok, if you like bourbon - just picked up a 26 of Buffalo Trace for $43.00.
Wow, what a nice sipper. Almost creamy but not as sweet as some bourbons.
And whooeeee, she's got some kick

If you can find an extra anejo tequila (cava de oro is the best brand but only found it in mexico) try it. I hate tequila but my buddy pushed me to try it and its in my top 3 sipping drinks now. Everyone who I have let sample it have loved it.

Ice maybe, good friends yes, but no. I can't mix drinks. Can only drink it straight or with a bit of water. Coffee has to be strong and black too

I've never tried it, but spent many childhood summer days floating Pike Creek just east of Windsor where this is made.lol.
Made in the old Hiram Walkers distillery.

Gibsons - finest rare
GIBSONS - FINEST RARE 12 year old is very good.
I use just a few drops of water.
Learned lots from the videos.
This 18 year old, see below, I just must try...

Makers is a great bourbon, just a little on the sweet side for my taste.

Makers is one of the "wheat" bourbons if I recall correctly and they are sweeter and have less bite. I'm not overly found of it myself, but it is good.
Gibson's Rare is very good Canadian Whisky and I just finished a bottle. I wish it wasn't.
For a good idea of what a bourbon should be (kind of a middle of the road so to speak) try Woodfords. Costco is relatively cheap for it. That's only my opinion though.

Try High West if you can get your hands on some. Fairly hard to come by but a few places in Calgary carry it.
Google "High West Whiskey"

I'm honestly still trying to like bourbon. Or Kentucky. Generally, I find it way too sweet, some of it even floral like my grandma's perfume.....even rye is a bit on the sweet side for me. I do really like a lot of the 40 creek whiskey, but have yet to try a bourbon/kentucky and say YES! I like this.
And yet I can love an Islay Whisky that some would say tastes like a wet sheep that has been rolled in a peat fire to put it out, then squeezed out and filtered through some barley mash. Weird, huh?

Just stay away from JD. That stuff is to whiskey what Budweiser is to beer.

Got really spoiled with these offerings while living in Tokyo. Haven't seen them here yet, but still searching!
