Default Loctite or something similar...

Hello, I'm sure some of the motorheads here can answer my question. I haven't used Loctite previously so I'm not totally up on how well it works. I'm not looking for a product to permanently hold a screw in place (like I'll never get it out again without breaking the thing). I would like a product that is going to prevent general unwinding of a screw at a hinge point. If does have a Teflon flange to allow sliding but the screw still has a tendency to want to unwind. BTW this is for a relatively small screw rather than a +3/8" bolt if it makes any difference. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks!

There are different types/strengths of Loctite for different applications. Sounds like you would want the low strength purple Loctite.

Never come out till it breaks, Red Loctite. If you MIGHT want to remove go Blue. Holds real well, use it on lots of cars, but you can break it loose without heat. You can always try blue and move up to Red if you have to. I never start with Red personally.

Blue is the way to go, won't make you cry when you strip a head or snap it off. Even blue can make life interesting though.

They make Loctite purple as well which is even lower strength than the blue.

The blue is removable but if you're using it for 1/4" or less it will be permanent

I use blue Loctite on my glasses when the little screw that holds the lense frame together. I am still able to remove it and change lenses years later.

I have got to chime in here and mention that Loctite used to make a product and may still do called "Black Max" it was an anti vibration compound that may well work on your hinge pin application. It was black in color and almost like a rubber seal when it set up. Check with Acklands and the like to see if its still available. D.H.

I had a new fishing reel come apart the first day I used it on a week long trip. I had no loctite handy, so I used my wife's nail polish to put it back together, held up the rest of the week. With nail polish you can use almost any color you want!

Strength of the bond is influenced by how clean the parts are. Clean the parts really well and use the primer the bond will be excellent. Leave it dirty may work as well as used bubble gum.
