Lancet Liver Fluke in Cypress Hills
As part of an ongoing research project, the Alberta Fish and Wildlife Division of Alberta Sustainable Resource Development would like to receive intact livers from mule deer and white-tailed deer harvested around Cypress Hills.
Little liver flukes, close cousins of giant liver flukes, originate in livestock and can be transferred to deer and elk. Fortunately the flukes are very tiny and generally do not cause problems for infected animals. Also fortunate, liver flukes DO NOT transfer to people or pets. And the flukes DO NOT affect the meat of infected animals.
Hunters can help--
Simply collect the entire deer liver (fresh - within 48 hours of death, or frozen).
Label it with the species, sex, age (fawn, adult) as well as the date and location of the kill.
Drop off double-bagged frozen livers at any local Fish and Wildlife office or in a CWD freezers in Medicine Hat, Elkwater, or Dunmore. Specific freezer locations are posted on our web site shown below.
If you use one of the freezers...DO NOT use CWD labels on livers. Use the labels provided for livers.
