"Truck Gun" storage Q
Quick question.
How are you guys storing your "truck guns"?
My understanding (which I believe to be correct) is that the firearm must be unloaded, and either cases or put out of sight, while the vehicle is locked.
No trigger locks etc. required for an unrestricted. Just unloaded and out of sight.
I also do keep a loaded magazine and a bit of ammo in the truck too.

Unloaded, and out of sight, with the truck doors locked.
You nailed it 100% for non restricted guns.
That is all that is required, and that is what I do.

Leaving a "truck gun" in the truck is just asking to have it stolen. When I go coyote hunting the rifle is brought into the house each night. I would never leave a rifle in a vehicle over night unless the rifle was stored out of sight in a locked vehicle in a locked garage. Maybe this is overkill but if your vehicle is left on the street, you are asking for trouble.

It may be overkill in the mind of some. However you can never go wrong with going over and above the requirements of the law to ensure piece of mind. I like your methods.

Not overkill in the slighteset . Even here on the farm , I never leave a gun in the truck over night . Dad says better to take it in than have some one get in your truck and shoot you with your own gun .. food for thought .

You are confusing transport and storage laws.
While in TRANSPORT, unlocked, unloaded.
While STORED, locked, away from ammo etc.
BUT, have fun explaining to the police and judge why you store every other gun in your house, and this one, in your less secure truck.
There are such charges of unsafe storage.

There is actually a section that deals specifically with leaving a firearm in an unattended vehicle.

A gun that is unloaded and either cased of out of site in the back seat of a locked truck is not contravening safe storage laws, wether if us left while in a store or over night .
That is clearly described in the regs.
As far as explaining to a cop why?
No explanation is necessary.

No explanation should be necessary, unfortunately some officers couldn't be bothered to learn the firearms laws.

That is what it is handy to keep a copy of the regs in the glove box- not that it will help sometimes.

Theft is so commonplace these days that even the RCMP can't leave their 'duty carbines' in a locked vehicle.
BTW what ever happened to the one stolen while the member was have a beer. I heard it was found and nothing else about it?.

If you are referring to the Calgary officer, it's recently come up in the news. No charges will be laid.....whoda thunk eh?

Totally agree...don't leave your firearms in a vehicle parked on the street over night.
