The factory " p " loads are slightly higher pressure. The .257 Roberts is slightly behind the 25-06 Remington, with hand loads you can get it close to factory 25-06 . The .257 is nice low recoiling round, your son will like it

No sweat.
The original loadings were because of dome of the weaker military actions prevalent at the time that were being used to build civilian rounds but I think it has far more to do with improper gunsmithing and hand loading than higher pressure factory loads .

Oh c' mon nothing smaller than a .338 ultra mag is enuf knockdown for moose ,,,
.257 Roberts and 6.5x55Swede etc, etc, are only good for Alberta gophers , and then you have to be within 50 yards to be effective , lol
And use only ultra modern monolithic bullets

Great calibre for antelope and whitetails. Guns in this calibre last minutes anywhere I've seen one for sale.

I have heard that they are known to be a barrel burner. Can anyone back this up? I'm just curious.
To the OP nice grab and great looking rifle.

Nope, actually the other way around as far as the quarter bores go!

Very similar case capacity to the 308 win. So no.

Beauty
I've been shooting an almost identical rifle for the past 25 years. Have been loading a 100 grain Sierra SBT bullet and has taken numerous deer and moose. Love it and it will be my sons rifle in about 7 years.

100 grain TSX's at 3150ish out of mine. I wouldn't hesitate to kill a moose or elk with it.
Great little round. Light recoil. Doesn't burn a ton of powder. And it's a quarter bore. What isn't to like?
Nice score!

I already told you... WSS had about 3-4 boxes of factory Horandy ammo, shoot it then reload it.
Factory ammo ~$45 / new brass $50+

I wish manufacturers would make left-hand rifles in the more obscure calibers like this...
Good luck !

There is always the lever action. They are not a lot different to shoot than a 243 or a 284 out of the same rifle. They work.

If you need .257 Roberts brass, send me a PM, my LGS is well supplied with Winchester brand Roberts brass. $40/bag of 50.
