Default 257 Roberts for fur bearing animals? -You sold me on the idea

Hey guys, maybe my google skills are lacking but can't seem to find out how well the round will do on fur bearing animals like wolfs and yotes, Im not interested in a large hole…
Thoughts?

There are much better choices for fur bearing animals. Particularly if you're interested in small hole in and no hole out. Which bears the maximum amount of money that a fur buyer will pay at the auction. Calibers that come to mind in terms of high pay back dividend are .223 Rem, .222 Rem and .204 Ruger. as best all around dog hunting rounds with optimal buyback for fur. Others may chime in with the 22-250, but I found it too loud and too destructive on fur.

Default perfect

To prevent tearing fur to shreds use deer bullets on coyotes and wolves and stay away from bone[shoulder shots]I use a .250 Savage and 100gr Sierras. The Roberts will be fine.Harold

Should be good for coyotes. Like mentioned above using bullets that are heavier, possibly like the nosler partition and the X bullets in the heaviest grains you can get will leave minimul fur damage on exit. Shot a dozen or so coyotes with the 25-06 and 115 grain partions and biggest hole was about 1/2 inch. 117 grain sierra's have taken (guessing) 50 coyotes and no big sew jobs with the exception of maybe two or three. My furs sold as well and what my dad did with fur friendly calibers.

I use a number of rifles chambered in .257 Roberts on coyotes, the key is to use the right bullet. I find the 75 V-Max bullets make a bigger mess than 117 SST's or 117 gr SP, so I use my deer loads on coyotes and they work fine, small hole in and small hole out.

I have only ever used a sierra 89 grn on coyotes in my 257 Roberts
I have shot many in the head only ever got an entry hole but the inside is smashed all to pieces
the only pass trough's I've ever gotten were neck shots but minimal damage
shoulder and ribs just damage a lot inside bot no pass through
I just double checked its not 42 grns of RL22 its 43 grns of RL22 I load with
for coyotes
for deer I use 120 grn nosler partitions over 43.5 grns RL22
ive got some experimental loads loaded up with RL 17 I want to test out sometime soon I'll let ya know how that works out

257 bob would be a great wolf cartridge. It may be a hit much on coyotes but as said by others I'd probably use a 'deer' bullet that will box together.

Pure speculation on my part. Have yet to shoot a yote with my 25-06.

Shot more than a few with mine using 100 grain TSX bullets. All would have needed serious sewing.

I've shot coyotes with a 25-06 using the 87 gr Remington PLHP moving at high speed from a healthy load of H414. Very accurate load, but inconsistent results for fur damage. Sometimes there was no exits, others the coyote was turned inside out. This was on called coyotes, so the ranges were pretty short (<100yds).

Like others have suggested, I might try some deer weight bullets to minimize fur damage. Still, you might want to learn to sew.

P.S - RL-19 is my preferred powder for the X57 case, I use it in the Roberts, 7X57 Mauser and 7.62X57 Medium... I have tried many others but keep coming back to RL-19.

Loving the responses, You helped me make my choice on a new caliber.
Today I got my rifle. It is a custom 257 Bob built on a G.33/40 Mauser action. It needs a some TLC but it's pretty little rifle.
I picked up all kinds of bullets and powder based on your recommendations.
Again, thank you guys/gals for posting.
