I shoot a 30 378 and just love it. The 300RUM is the closest ballistically to the 30 378. However the 30 370 ammunition is about double the price of your 300RUM, only real down side to the 30 378

I see your considering the 30-378 and the 338 RUM. If your looking at the 338 RUM you must be thinking about a bigger bullet. If you want the heavier bullets and velocity have you considered the 338-378?

Yes if your looking for a .338 go with the .338-378 as it has the best balistics of all the .338 cal.

Wrong forum page.

No worries ... the Mods will probably move this thread to the 'Guns and Ammo' page for you [ http://www.outdoorsmenforum.ca/forumdisplay.php?f=6 ]. You'll get lots of great advice there.

As for your question ... sorry I can't help, cuz I'm not into magnums. For rifles, I shoot a 50 cal BP, a 30-06, and a 45-70. I've got no use for magnums ... sorry 'bout that.

'Good Hunting' to you!

I would agree if thats all you are looking for, but if you what to be able to use this gun for all kinds of game and you do your own reloading the 30 378 offers a better selection of bullet weights. Even if you do not reload there is a better selection of factory bullet weight 130gr up to 225gr for the 30 378 were as the 338 378 I believe only comes in 200gr and 225gr for factory loads.

I guess the question that begs asking is what are looking to gain with your new rifle. If you are just looking to buy a new rifle just because, then that's fine but truthfully, I don't see you gaining anything tangible in the real world with a .30-378 over the .300RUM. They are basically two very fast .30 calibre cartridges.

Go for the 338-378 wby,if you want to send a 180 grain bullet at 3600'. Before I die, I will have a 338-378 wby in my gun safe.

Are you reloading your own bullets, because factory weatherby 338 378 only come in 200gr and up and are flying out at 3380, the 30 378 on the other hand has a 180gr and is around 3460. I believe the new tipped barns in a 130gr is flying out at 3750 in the 30 378.

Don't own either as I have no need whatsoever for them, but it seems to me that a .300 W'by will do pretty well anything a .30-378 will do with a ton less powder. Any of the bigger .338's is a step up from any .30 IMO. The bigger frontal area and choice of heavier bullets makes them all more practical for the biggest stuff we have in this country, especially the stuff that bites back and a .300 Rpy loaded to the teeth is about as good a long range deer whacker as it gets. Personally I'd rather have my .338-06 with 225's or 250's in my hands than any .300 ever made if it came down to trouble at close range. The absolute biggest, fastest versions aren't always the best - ask any of the modern .45-70 shooters how their pet loads perform within their effective ranges - it's astonishing what heavyweights at far less speed can do. God forbid we ever have to have just one gun, but if that were the case pretty sure mine would be a .338 Win Mag. Funny - I don't own one.

If you got your 300 RUM in a barrel length that is 2" longer with Retumbo you'll be in exactly the same realm as the 30-378. If it was me I would go with something in a different caliber.

Comparing my 300RUM with a friends 30-378,both with 26" barrels,and both using the 180gr tsx,my rifle produced 3380fps,and his produced 3450fps,a difference of 75fps.

Go with the 338-378. I just picked mine up a month back and it is a custom on a Ruger #1 action. I havent had the chance to shoot it yet but I love my .340 wby so much I just know that this will be even better...

A 338-378 will recoil roughly 43.7 ft-lbs versus 30.2 ft-lbs for your 300RUM both in a 9 lb rifle or 45% more.

Recoil is felt and very subjective...I weigh 160 and shoot a .460 off the bench and it throws me back about 2.5 feet. A bigger guy will get hit harder and feel way more then I do.It just whips me about...I love the big bores but to be honest with you when i pull out a .460 or .416 rigby..or even the .340 no one wants to shoot em...even the .458 with a 405 grain slug intimidates most ppl...Start low and work your way up to the full power loads...

Gonna send ya a pm now...
