Nope.
Restricted firearms, whether they are handguns or restricted long barrelled can only be used on a certified range.
For hunting, you're stuck with non-restricted rifles, shotguns, or bows.

OK, but what about an animal that you see while at the range?

As a favor to the applicable gene pool, legal game animals SHOULD be harvested if they are dumb enough to wander on a range!
Cheers, G.

Hope you are joking because if you read the range orders on any certified range you should be shooting at a target with the backstop behind it.You are liable to be charged with unsafe use of a a firearm.A lot of ranges are also game preserves and all wildlife is protected.

Our range has lots of critters, it's where they go to get away from the hordes of quads that invade the area on weekends, the range is their only safe haven in the immediate area, no shooting of wildlife on our range. Cease fire is called when animals wander downrange. We have an agreement with the critters, they don't mind us shooting as long as we don't shoot at them.

I sure wish that would change. I would love to have an AR for varmit hunting. Speaking of which, I was looking through the December issue of Alberta Outdoorsmen and the article "Finding Coyotes" by Al Voth, there appears to be a picture of of him hunting over a pile of cattle carcasses with an AR or AR variant. Is that legal? or am I not properly identifying that rifle?

AR is restricted, so no, not legal. Probably misidentified the rifle.

If your interested in a AR style rifle for varmints check out the Robinson Armament xcr. It's not built on an AR platform, so its non restricted. It's sold by wolverine supply out of Manitoba and will run you about $2200.

Why do we take ourselves so seriously? Maybe we all need to relinguish our guns and call it a day. Oh yeah, I can't do that I use it to legally hunt and KILL game. And I really enjoy that. It must be x-mas break, I am actually getting involved in these petty issues.
By the way, anybody who believes everything they read in threads on an Internet forum need to think again. Unless the comments are way off it is acceptable. We are all expected to show some due diligence in using our ability to be critical thinkers. If not I have a cheap holiday for you and your bikini clad wife in Afganistan. Just watch out for those Taliban guys, they seem to have a problem with womyn, especially those with the ability to think critically.
