Default Trail cams - when and how many?

I love getting pics off my cameras. Its like Christmas morning when you were a kid...not knowing what you would get. Sometimes you didn't get what you ask for and other years you got it all.

The last couple of years I haven't put out all my cameras for what ever reasons, Wildfire or just not enough time. But with a couple of nice bucks on my recent pics I'm going to put out my cameras this season.

When do you put out your cameras?

How many do you put up in a certain area? I have access to a couple of 1/4 sections ( sole permission). How many cameras are enough for a 1/4 section for example?

Any other camera tips for set up?

if you have one camera on a 1/4 you'll likely know every deer that lives there. as long as you place it well

but you may not catch the once and a while bucks.

if it's a spot i really want to hunt i'll have 5 or more. usually leap frogging them back to where the bucks are holed up during legal light.

but if you know a property well then you can just have one out there to keep track of your deer

Now is a good time to go out and set up cams. With snow on the ground it's easy to see which paths are well used. When the snow disappears some paths aren't as obvious as others. I went out last week and ended up setting up my cams in different locations that I had previously planned on. All maybe 20 to 30 yards away where multiple paths met, instead of one a single trail.

I've had up to 12 cameras in less than a quarter, but 3-4 cameras are more than enough to cover a 1/4 section.

If you can find a natural mineral site or spring.. These can very productive for a few weeks From early April - June.

Also I find the deer move to different areas for different reasons and they will travel a few km's to get there. I've had bucks disappear only to find out another hunter has him on camera 10km away.

I keep my cam out all year! I like to face it north to keep the sun out of the pic. Threw out the year I move the cam around the area where I will be hunting in the fall but come closer to opening day I move the cam back to where I will be setting my stand or blind in.

I have around 10 and usually run some year round. I check every 2-3 weeks some are up to 3 hours from home.

I run four. Last season two got stolen so I am discouraged to set up remaining two. I think I will setup this weekend though, curious to see what's out there. Last fall captured three pics of a cougar.

I like to put them out near the end of July and keep them out until March. At least then you can usually get a pretty good idea in July how big the bucks on cam are going to be and March most of them drop their antlers.
