Best all arould caliber
ive got a question for all you serious hunters out there, whats the best caliber of rifle for a good all around gun? im looking to hunt mostly big game(deer, moose, bear) and maby coyotes. i have a 303 brit and a 22lr but im looking for a new rifle. i shot 2 deer last fall with the 303 and it hits hard but im wondering if theres a better fit for what i want to do. was thinking about a 270 or 300 win mag, any ideas?
Good luck filling those tags

My vote is for 270 Win, light recoil, hits hard, can kill any animal you listed if you can put the bullet in the right spot. Also it's what I shoot, so it gets my vote.

My vote would also be for the .270. Although, if you wanted to spend the extra money, I just love my .270 Wby Mag.

You just asked a question with no real answer. I have used a savage 308 since I was 16(44 now), many moose and deer have been harvested with it. I love the gun. Can you try shooting some friends guns to see how you like them. Recoil seems to be the enemy of lots of good guns. Lots of my friends have bought guns they ended up being scared to pull the trigger on. I'm sure you will get many choices offered to you here.

.270 is a great all around gun. My hunting partner swears by it has shot antelope, sheep, elk, deer, moose and bear and has been able to do so with 1 shot.
My opinion, the 30 06, cant go wrong with it

calibur
It depends on how well you shoot. I admit I am not a good shot because I do not shoot enough but I compensate by making sure I am very close. I used to use a .257 roberts to a 7mm to a ,270 which I use now but I refuse to shoot over 150 yds. Piker

Best all around CALIBER I would say is .308 (or .30 Cal)
For an all around CARTRIDGE I like the .270WIN or the .300Wby
.....sorry get all "terminological" on your azzes

I can not name just one all-around caliber but I can name 5. 7MM-08, 303 win., 270 win, 280 rem, and the 30-06. I can think of a few more but then that would be to much for just one all-around caliber.

I have a .270Win, but after needing more than one shot to put an elk down this last season (one through the lungs from pretty close range didn't do it) I'm thinking about trading up to a .300wsm. Shoots flatter, hits harder... as long as I can be comfortable with the recoil....
But yeah, a .270Win is perfect for deer....
Maybe I'm jsut succumbing to the urge for something new LOL

.270 or 30-06.......all of the mentioned calibers will do the job but I'm including the availability of ammo, etc. Everybody sells 30-06 ammo, in a large variety of grain options.
That said, I don't own either caliber....

To the OP;
Caliber is the diameter of the rifle's bore, in N.America it is typically measured from land to land, accross the Atlantic they sometimes measure it groove to groove.
Now you meant undoubtably to ask what is a good all round cartridge to use for Alberta big game.
That my friend is about as subjective question as could ever be asked.
No to people share the same recoil tollerence.
No to people hunt in the exact same manner (stalk, sit, drive)
Therefore there is likely no concensus that will come of your question.
All that aside a look at the typical cartridge choices available in a harware store in "Anywherealberta" will guide you to a short list of possible candidates.
Those most likely being.
270Win
30/30Win
308Win
30'06
7mm Rem Mag
300 Win Mag
303Brit
Good luck

thanks for all the help everyone i appreciate it. the one thing i know is i dont want to use my 303 brit for deer again, almost time to retire that old girl(1954) and she kicks like a mule. p.s i think we should all be thankfull for being able to do what we all love to do(hunt, fish, trap) we outdoorsmen are a dying breed now a days and in canada we have some of the best HFT in the world so get out there, take a walk, try and fill some tags this year and respect our hunting herritage so our kids have as much fun as we do. even if you have to eat a tag sandwich at the end of the season it all goes to a good cause.
good luck filling those tags

In my opinion, platform means much more than any cartridge does. Were I smart, I'd sell every big game rifle I owned and have Bill Leeper build me a 270 Winchester on a Stainless Steel Model 70 action in a good McMillan stock and never look back.

Bill is unlinkable. And is selective about what he takes on any more.

I like 270 win or 7 mm Rem Mag. Either or! I would have added the 280 Rem but it is just not available just about everywhere like the other two.

270, 308, 7mm-08, 7X57, 280, 30-06 will all do very well inside of 300 yards.
If you have a hankering to hang the "Mag" on your shooting then the 7mm or 300 Win will fill the bill.
