Hard call. That 3rd pic has me thinking boar but the first 2 look sowish. Would have to see it in person but leaning boar.

Congrats on the 18 7/8”. That’s a great bear

Why pass on an old sow? If it's a bear you want and there are for sure no cubs then go for it. It's a beautiful bear and you killing this sow isn't going to push black bears into the threatened classification in Alberta.
I know of one killed with a bow in the early 90s between mayerthorpe and whitecourt that went 20 9/16. No one seemed to care that one was a sow.
Questions I'd ask myself: Is it legal? Yes. Is it ethical? No cubs, so yes. Is it a bear I'd be proud of? Yes.

Let me clarify that I realize that legally you're not allowed to kill a sow with cubs so it's more than just an ethics question but you see what I'm saying.

First thing I saw looks like a sow

Just to be clear, the restriction is

Quote:
It is unlawful to:
  • hunt a black bear under the age of one year or a female black bear accompanied by a cub under the age of one year.
You will see sows with older cubs, and in those cases, you would be good to go. Whether or not you choose to, that's up to you.

A note on sows. I stated on the forum somewhere we have only taken 3 sows since the 80's in my camp that went over 300 pounds live weight. Our DNR requires all bears taken submit a tooth for aging. Those 3 sows were 11, 11, and 13 years old.
Woodland bears.

So Redeerhunter, did your buddy ever end up shooting the bear in the original pictures? If he did was it a boar or a sow and how big was it.?

I went in last night and there was a bear already having supper. Checked my 2nd bait.
We start hunting tuesday setting up bear camp for a week.

He/she is still there. Will let you know.

If you are unsure if you want to shoot it you have to at least find out if it’s a he/she/it.

Just run up and lift the bears leg well it has its head in the barrel. Of course you need to snap a pic for proof

Some nice pics being posted...I always enjoy seeing the spring bear hunt pics posted by AO members.

My bait is starting to get a bit busier...finally. It’s been slower than years past but activity has picked up the last few days.
At last 12 different bears...including a large black boar and the coloured boar in the above pic.

Good plan!
Remember to you newer hunters the females have a long whip of hair that hangs down there that carries the scent and helps spread it during their breeding period. Those whips can be pretty long and thick. At the right angles that can be seen and mistaken for more than it is.

That colored bear certainly looks like a shooter in my books. Good luck.

Well done. Very nice bear first or otherwise.
Be sure ti show that picture to the taxidermist, many don't bring out the cleft on the noggin which is a great character feature.
