Default 2018 Elk

This year I tried a new zone. It’s a six point zone on draw. I hunted opening week of rifle and never seen or heard any elk. Went back a week later for another four days on horseback and still no sign.... Starting to regret my choice be now as we usually have some success during the rut. The wife and I went back in on Saturday Oct 13th for four days of quality time together at camp. After getting to camp and unpacking the horses we waited out a snow squall i n the tent. Around 3 pm the snow subsided so we headed up the mountain on horses. We reached the tree line and stopped to tie up the horses and go out on foot... well I didn’t even get 10 yards from the horse and I see him.. he’s staring at my wife’s horse. Like a decoy I think the elk seemed curious and he just laid there in plain view of my wife’s saddle horse. So I watched him till he finally turned his head so I could see the sixth point. Within a minute he was dead. Want to spend quality time with your wife? This is a good way!!! We skinned and butchered till dark and headed back to camp around 9 pm with the meat left hanging in a tree. Sunday morn a very good friend walked in on foot 14 kilometres to help us pack the meat up on the horses. Couldn’t get it all so I went back on Monday and got the last two quarters and the cape.
