Exclamation Caution!!!! PM not from Rob!!

Just to let everyone know. A couple of minutes ago I had a strange PM, "Important message from the forum administration!" Says that I have a virus and need to visit a link.
Till he responds if I were you I would not visit the link.

I have forwarded it to Rob.

Default its a spammer boys

I got it as well. Don or one of the other mods. Banned the person. Seems they are getting more creative in the spamming of this board.

That's twice now in a month. Have these scumbags broken through the firewall that is supposed to protect our personal information here? Rob?

Actually it's about 4 times now but we've managed to get a couple of them pretty quick. What they are doing is registering and then going to the "Community" link and pulling names so they can send mass PMs. They HAVE NOT breached any of our Admin Control Panels so any information you provided at sign up has not been compromised. These are bots with IPs from China, not real people. If you get anything from the forum in a PM it IS NOT from the forum, we wouldn't do that, so just delete it.

What we've done now is set the maximum number of PMs that can be sent at 10 every 30 minutes. This will at least slow them down, which is about all we can do.

Rob

Maybe, maybe not. Make sure your virus scanner is up to date, and do a scan!
what did the website say? I am curious if they are just trying to get you to go to a link so they can be paid or if they are sending you to a link with a virus.

I run a Mac, so I like going to their sites.

Thanks Rob, 'dance.
Thanks for keeping the hordes at bay.

From China eh! Well, how about that.
Too bad we don't have some sort of homing torpedo software that would follow their crap right back to the source and then 'kapow'.

Hey Gramps,

Don't think there is much we can do but stay sharp and try to get them as fast as we can. Startin' to become a pain though...

Has any consideration been given to newbie probation periods? For example, 10-15 legit posts before being allowed to PM, and 30-50 posts before being allowed to start a thread? We're usually pretty good on picking up on a troll. Just a thought.

We have the ability to delete PMs, either sent or received, from banned members. We can't actually see them so we don't know who would have got what, but it's a handy tool to keep spammers at bay.
