I'm sure the "authorities" would have liked to keep them locked up until their next court appearance.

It is the "system" that says they have to be released

With the broken legal system we have in this country, the "authorities" probably had no choice but to release them. Failure to do so could have been a violation of their "charter rights". As we see on a daily basis, the criminals have the "rights" while the innocent victim(s) continue to have no rights at all.
