Default Elk Strategies

So I inadvertently got drawn for elk...I mean to 999 it but oh well, I am not going to waste it. I know of several bachelor herds in my area with some legal bulls. It's a tight forested area and I will be bow hunting. Is bugling the best strategy and if so, can someone point me to an authoritative video so I can learn this craft? Or are there better ideas?

Thanks in advance
Scott

Don Laubach, I believe it's Eastman series?? Older grainy video, but the guy calls elk from everywhere within earshot to him. Good luck!

If they get pressured quite a bit like most of the elk I’ve experienced, you’re better off sticking to a cow call. Don’t even bother bugling unless you know it’s an elk and he is fired up. Most of the bulls I’ve called in was just with cow calls. Call and wait for a bit. If you don’t see anything or hear anything walk a ways then stop and call again. Be ready. Most of the time the come in pretty quietly in my neck of the woods. The only time I bugle is when I hear an elk bugle first. It might be different if they aren’t pressured as much though.

Many of the aforementioned source are pretty great. In my opinion though, this guy has the best stuff on elk calling and whatnot:

I personally haven’t bumped into anything better.

Jay Scott has several podcasts where he interviews guides who call for a living basically. He's also got tons of info on his Instagram about it.

Based on what I've heard/read and NOT on personal experience, you're probably better off cow calling, depending on the unit. Good luck!
