Default rimfire small game gun

Hi folks: I need to put together an economic and accurate rimfire package for hunting grouse and rabbits. It has to be accurate (did I say that?).

If you were to do it right and cost effective what would you put together and for how much. I

Thanks in advance.

Buy a Savage and top it with an Elite 3200 3-9. You didn't say whether you wanted .22 cal or .17 cal

I purchased this rifle http://www.wholesalesports.com/onlin...ory=1011000701
for my girls.

I put a Simmons 4x 22Mag scope on it. All in, this package (rifle and scope) is only about $225. It is very short (33") and light (<5lbs). One downside, the stock is short for adults (I can shoot it well though and I am over 6ft.).

All I know, is that Dad enjoys this rifle as much or more than the girls! It's so small, it makes trips with me as the rimfire alternative!

I'd reccomend a standard ruger 10-22 (blued synthetic was my choice) and a bushnell trophy 3-9 scope. If your just hunting small game theres no need for a super expensive scope. I set up a ruger 10-22 blued/synthetic last winter, i have shot about half a dozen jack rabbits with it (10 yrds-50yrds) a few cottontails (10-15yrds), a ton of starlings (likely hundreds) (10-75yrds), a partridge and a couple grouse with it. Theres a few other pests i've used it on at the farm with great accuracy as well. I have a 4-12 power cheap tasco on it, works fine for rimfire small game hunting. Total cost will be $400 ($300 for gun, $100 for scope).

Oh, and for groups i can put 10 shots ito a dime size hole at 40 yards (12X Scope) with game loads ammunition. Loonie size groups at 50 yards and by 75 yards compensation is needed to hit targets but it still seems pretty good (2'' or so) The clip is an advantage to this rifle over others as well, works nicely to have a spare always ready in the pocket in case a quick reload is needed (i run into this a lot starling hunting when a big flock lands in the field and can't figure out whats happening to their buddies). Good luck with whatever you choose.

A ruger 10-22 clip holds 10 bullets. Is is allowed to have 10 bullets while hunting?

I believe there is no limit for the amount of shells in a clip for rim fires. It only pertains to center fires. I have a 25 shot clip for my ruger 10 / 22.

All good suggestions here. I bought a synthetic 10-22 for my son and a CZ Lux for myself, topped with the Bushnell trophy. I don't know that it's any more accurate than any other, but it sure is a beautiful gun. I just like holding and looking at it.....

Default cartridges allowed

The limit of 5 is only for semi-autos when hunting big game. If you're not using a semi-auto you can have as many as you want in the clip.
I don't think there are regulations about numbers of cartridges (but not shells) for hunting upland game birds, whether semi-auto or not.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Well, you can't hunt big game with a .22, so that limit isn't relevant. I've gone over the hunting regs and CFC website. Seems you can hunt the game you have identified with a .22, and there is no limit as to the number of cartridges you can have in the clip.

About the ONLY restriction I could find is that you couldn't shoot migratory IF you only had one cartridge in the gun.

I have a 17 Mack2 and IMO it has more take down power than my .22 and has more reach but the ammo is more expensive so it is more a toy than anything else. If we are going out to do alot of plinking or gopher hunting I will bring the 22 but if we are just driving around spotting I will bring the 17.
