We're in French about half way to the point on the west. Some action right around noon and again around 4....lots of lazy marks and short chasers in between...slow day overall but we put fish on the ice. One over 75cm on a big Williams wobbler.
Hunkered down for the night now but might make a move to the main lake in the morning if the wind isn't crazy.

I'm curious if you have any luck during the night, if you have lines out. I'm bringing all my stuff to stay on the ice. But I'm only doing it if I can wake up on a spot for lakers. I don't need to travel eight hours to catch big burbot. Good luck tomorrow.

Well this wk-end was either hang on or pour a coffee and have a nap type fishing for lakers.
Seems the morning produced right up until a little after lunch then sporadic hits, lots of chasers though so kept you glued to the electronics

Did run into a fella from North Battleford who was dialled in for the morning bites which is always good intel as to when seems to be a ruff time to be out there. He was a wealth of information as he simply loves this lake and it showed.
Peter came over and chatted a bit, he is the fella with the RAV4 and caught that huge 42” laker in 2006, was awesome reliving the story with him and his epic battle and the multiple attempts to revive this awesome fish but he wasn’t going to leave it below the ice and rightfully so. The picture just leaves you like a young boy at a cheerleaders rally and toss in the story....WOW.
Now here is the kicker he was closer to shore than us, showed up later caught a bunch of lakers, said he couldn’t keep them off and said take a look at my best burbot! Ohhh my....the length of my leg and a gut on it that any seasoned beer drinker would envy....look forward to many more conversations.
Ice travel is safe, pick your spots where to stop as there are some deeper drifts, ice trails are showing up now making the guessing game of best way to get to an area easier.....ohhh and the dead sticks with 6” herring on...nothing....well at least mine were not active.

Makes sense. Lakers can roam wherever they want in the winter as the temperature is more or less uniform under the ice. If the walleye and pike are in shallow feeding on minnows and perch, no reason there shouldn't be some lakers up there too...and they would be there to feed and therefore more aggressive. My experience over the years is that the bigger fish are caught on the less fished patterns on a body of water (eg. open water trolling for walleye). Anyways, I've thought about fishing shallower when I come over, but we'll have to see what time and mobility is like to try some different options. Thanks for the info.

Ya funny we drilled in 35 fow and saw nothing so went another 30 yards and in 70 fow marked lots of fish so hung out there but stretched the two dead stick out to 100 fow.

The lakers that were active were in the more shallow water at the top of the ridge and we were mid ridge,

Oh well it was still fun

A buddy of mine said his cousin was out on friday with his friends and they caught 45 in 12 fow with 6 going over 75cm. Said saturday they never got a hit!

Saturday was slow for us....2 fish around noon and a couple more around 4. Lots of marks and lots of chasers but they just wouldn't hit anything. I finally got a couple on a big Williams wobbler spoon. Sunday we woke up to the jaw jacker at 5:45am....hit another fish on the next drop and 2 more before 8am. Then nothing till about 11:30 when we hit a few more bang bang. Packed up and gone by 3. We didn't end up making a move just played the 50-100 feet game. Everything was caught 60-80.

I seen anywhere from 14-16" of ice this past week as we ventured by sled out onto the main lake. Some flood water in areas but overall wasn't to bad to travel. The fishing was hit and miss but we did land a few overs. I forgot how much fun it is watching these fish chase up on the active target!!

Hey Guys,
How’s ice travel for a quad and pull behind sled with the snow right now? I’ve drove up twice and walked out this year but would like to do a bit of exploring this trip! Thanks for the feedback

You'll be fine. We traveled literally the entire lake Alberta side by Truck. Vehicles are everywhere with minimal issues. Some flood water if you shovel out a spot for a tent. Tight lines

Just a safety warning for anyone thinking about English Bay. Large heave/ice separation about 20 yards off the launch and the ice is maybe 1 inch thick. Do not drive a vehicle over it unless you want a truck wash :]

Slow for us as well. A few to the ice, a couple lost. But mostly seeing chasing without the final commitment to bite.

Seems like more years than not the ice sucks on that side of the lake...

Booked a cabin for a full week mid march can't wait.

Most unsafe part of Cold Lake is English Bay. I seen a year where there was 100 meters of open water in March with 2-3 feet of ice still.

On that note, went out this morning for 2 hours and the bite was actually fairly steady. Caught 5 fish and lost maybe 4-5 more, 77 FOW. Fish were eating off the bottom mainly but would chase up 10-12 feet at times. Just used a white glow airplane jig with some walleye belly.
