Default Transducer depth.

I’ve never used a sonar for ice fishing before. I have a Garmin Striker 4 and am going to try it next time I’m out. How deep down the hole does the transducer have to sit? Does it have to be right at the bottom of the hole? Thanks for your help.

We could go through a bunch of geometry based on the cone angle of your transducer, the size of your hole, and the depth of the ice to calculate exactly how far in the hole you need to place your transducer each time out. If you want to pack a calculator each time out let me know.

Or...you can just make sure it's in as far as the ice is deep so that the ice doesn't interfere and call it good. Guess which option every single ice fisherman uses.

Just past the bottom of the ice for best results.

Agreed, just past the bottom of the hole will give a good depth reading. The non-ice transducer takes up some precious hole area. Hooking the transducer just below the ice can keep your hole mostly clear.

I have a transducer hole drilled right beside my fishing hole.
No issues that way.

Yup I will drill and drop just to see what’s going on but once I get on them then I always drill one hole for electronics and keep the transducer just below the ice.

So far have not had my line tangled up in the transducer but I keep telling myself set hook and remove transducer from the water.....only a matter of time before the poop show happens

Ah heck, even if you have it down a separate hole, there's eventually going to be a circus at some point. I run a camera down a separate hole and I have had fish tangle that thing dozens of times - it's part of the fun !!!!!
