No you are right. But people nowadays eat for recreation and don’t care what they are putting down themselves moreso now than ever. Our populace’s obesity stats are very telling. Food is fuel.

The food isn't the problem, it's laziness and not giving a hoot that's the problem. There's nothing wrong with going out and enjoying a fast food meal once in awhile. But nowadays you see family's who eat %75 of their meals out of a brown paper bag. Now with this skip-the-dishes crap people just have another excuse to not leave their couch so they don't have to pause their 10hour netflix marathon. These people are knowingly killing themselves and could care less about it. That's the problem.

Absolutely agree!! Problem is most people aren’t active enough. It’s those that should watch their nutritional habits more closely. The body is meant to move and is your true vehicle. People need to be more passionate of their health rather than debating about crap mystery food. Food can either be the best medicine or the worst poison.

I've tried many donair places, but can't claim to have tried them all. A person who has accomplished that feat wouldn't be able to brag about it on the internet due to excessively fat fingers.
High Voltage is very busy most of the time therefore they sell enough to have fresh ingredients in their food. I'm wary of establishments that specialize in everything. Simply makes me wonder about the age of the cooked meat, sauces, etc. Having briefly worked in the food industry I've become quite picky as to my dining choices.

Swiss donair and Top donair are my votes, when Swiss opened up they had no competition, not as good as back in the day but still the best imo

I sure like Swiss Donair. But I sure miss Charles Smart.
If you go in the bush , bring a donair with you and some foil. Re-wrap it and warm it up on the coals. Completely better experience eating it out there.
If you want to add some seasoning to a donair , try Cavenders Greek in the small yellow can. Seriously awesome.

Are there any Donair shops in Edmonton that still use real Charcoal to cook their Donairs, and use real sliced meat interlaced, not ground mystery meat. That is how Donairs were all originally made. Heat lamps and ground meat just wouldn't make them taste right.

I’ve eaten there a decent amount. Not bad, but Simply Donair just south on 50th street is better.
I’ve never tried High Voltage because it is closed everytime I’m in that area (they close at like 6 pm or something weird) but everyone tells me it’s tbe best.
Honestly though, as long as the pita isn’t stale, the veggies fresh and the donair meat cooked properly, seems to me it’s pretty hard to make a bad donair. After that, I choose my donair places based upon amount of food per dollar.

Gusto Burger? Right on the trail between Taco Time & Discovery Computer? If it was he is long gone but Papa Gusto is still a St.Albert legend 15 yrs after closing up shop.
He had a burger called King Henry the 8'th, 10lbs of beef, 2lbs of bacon and 2lbs of cheese. You had to give him a few hours heads up so he could prep & cook it and if you could eat it in one sitting without going to the can to purge you would get free food for a month. In his 30+ yrs of being in business only 2 people killed it, before it killed them. He said both guys were as skinny as could be, all the 300lb guys couldn't even come close. Man I miss that place, his donairs and burgers were second to none
I worked at Mr.Lube out there a lifetime ago, we would trade Papa Gusto services for donairs & burgers all the time, his little Ford Escort was the best maintained vehicle in St.Albert
There is another great joint at the top of the hill behind Timmys/Wendy's (across the trail from Riverside) in that plaza where Peddlers Pub used to be. He is still crankin em out.

I still remember that banner with claims spelled incorrectly as clams! Loved his burgers and donairs though!

Haven't had a good donair since leaving Halifax. Donair pizza from Greco was awesome. Simon king apparently got their recipe out of Halifax, made a decent donair for a while but doesn't taste the same. Don't know if they cheaped out.
Worked at a Greek restaurant in another life, we made our own meats and tzatziki sauce, best gyros on the go. wish I had taken the recipes

Everybody hs different tastes, but for my taste buds. It used to be really good then about 18months ago it went downhill. Enough that I noticed and wasn't so crazy about going there.
I guess about year ago I saw another top donair on the north side 82 st 144ave , and stone the crows i recognised the staff from capilano
I dont live that far from the capilano one, but i dont eat there
I do eat at the northside one tho

Donair - Originally was a mixture of spiced meats thinly sliced and stacked on a spit, cooked vertically. Now almost universally ground meat, goat, lamb, chicken or sometimes beef; cooked on a rotating spit, originally cooked with charcoal, now usually a big heat lamp and sliced off with a long sharp knife. Served on Pita with various sauces and vegetables.
Gyro and Swarma - NOT ground meat, usually lamb or goat, sometimes chicken, done on a rotating spit over charcoal. Served on Pita with various sauces.

But it was very dry!
