To me, the staff and the service that they provide are the most important things. IMO, the guys that worked at Russel's and moved on to WSS, were awesome. They provided top notch service. Several of the other current WSS staff were also excellent and took pride in their jobs.
I really feel sorry for the employees at WSS and truly hope that they c

Times 2 Big Sky, Russell Sports was my go to store, their employees were always knowledgeable and helpful.
Wholesale Sports actually bought them out.

Another Vicitm of the Times
Was a time when Dad came back from a winter on the Pipelines and treated himself to a shiny new gun and shiny new scope and ....
Was a time when the young guy from Nova Scotia finally had the scratch to buy himself his own hunting rifle instead of using Great Grampa's 303 with the remaining 6 bullets in the CIL box from the 1960's, thanks to the booming Alberta Economy.
Was a time when people could go out and have a nice set of camo for very cold weather and for warm weather, and good boots on top of that!
Ever wonder why most US States have ONE Cabela's, but Edmonton alone has TWO???
Even when the economy was booming, Retail stores paying low wages attracted staff who were lacking in drive and customer service. We tolerated it because in the Boom years, no one could keep good people at the retail service sector wages. That did not kill WSS.
WSS did not cut 500 people making 6 figures and upward, while paying fat severance packages. These people will move on to the next retail employer who pays similar non skilled service industry wages. It might take a while, but they will get similar work.
Its not on line marketers, or competition from other Outdoor stores, ITS THE ECONOMY STUPID!!!!
Next will be the boat dealers, the quad and snowmobile dealers and the ....
However, like Sears Canada, it is a sign of the times in Western Canada.
No Management Magic can change the fact we are getting stomped on out here.

It sucks, regardless how you look at it. Now there will be no decent outdoors store for me to go to in the proximity of 500 km. Wholesale was the closest one 200 km away. I went there pretty much every time I was in Grande Prairie.
One for the memory:

IMPORTANT WHOLESALE SPORTS ANNOUNCEMENT
September 14, 2017
It is with great sadness that Wholesale Sports Canada Ltd. ("Wholesale Sports") brings the following news to its loyal customers.
At 3:00 PM (MST) today, Wholesale Sports' parent company issued a news release announcing that Wholesale Sports is conducting an orderly wind down of it business operations.
Numerous external factors led to this decision; including an increasingly competitive environment, the continued shift to on-line purchases and an overall slowing of consumer discretionary spending as a whole, including the outdoor industry. As a result, it was decided that the orderly wind down of Wholesale Sports was required through a store wide liquidation sale event.
All Wholesale Sports stores will be closed for the remainder of the day this September 14th and the official liquidation sale event will begin at each of the 12 retail locations, starting at Wholesale Sports' regular store hours, on Friday, September 15th. The liquidation sale event will continue until all merchandise is sold at each retail store, but will end no later than December 28, 2017.
No new online purchases will be processed after 3:00 PM (MST) today, as the Wholesale Sports website will become a static webpage that will only offer customers information on the liquidation sale event. However, all current open on-line orders will be fulfilled by Wholesale Sports.
It is important to note that certain Wholesale Sports polices will be affected by this announcement and the liquidation sale event. After the announcement and during the liquidation sale event:
Various merchandise discounts will be announced throughout the process, watch the Wholesale Sports website for details.
All sales are final. No refunds or exchanges on all items purchased.
All Wholesale Sports gift cards can be used in store only until December 28, 2017. Any gift card balance remaining after December 28, 2017 shall have no cash value and be void for further use.
All Wholesale Sports Wild Card discounts will no longer be valid for use.
All manufacturer warrantees remain in effect. Customers should contact manufacturers directly with any issues.
Wholesale Sports thoroughly appreciates the loyalty from you, our Wholesale Sports customers and invites you to participate in our store liquidation sale event. We wish to sincerely thank you for your support and patronage over the years.
Sincerely,
The Wholesale Sports Team

And at least two in the hunting section as well, I believe. Something tells me there will be a few more though. To be fair, it is big news for Alberta outdoorsmen though.

The UFA was the worst thing that could happen Wholesale Sports. Just like Sportsmans Warehouse.

I shopped at WSS only when I had too. Staff had the wrong attitude for retail - IMO. So does the UFA for that matter.

That's terrible. I was going to be up there this weekend setting up trail cams and hoped to pick up a coffin blind while I was there, lol. Didn't realize there was a handful of threads on this one until it was too late

Despite what people may think about them, I for one am sad. Any time a store like this closes it's less options. While I can't think of the last item I bought there, generally each store has something the other doesn't.

Bad management by UFA. They should have never bought WS in the first place. I remember the good old days of Frenchy's and Barottos.

UFA head office micromanaged WS into the ground. Once WS is totally done they can concentrate their efforts in doing the same to the farm stores.

I for one am glad WS is closing (joking)
That means I never have to buy anything from UFA again.
I actually tried to support them whenever possible
A close family member of mine worked for UFA for 25 years.
Back in the day they were a great company. When the long time manager retired they brought someone who thinks they are KING #&@% and can degrade the people who works for him. This person said no way and quit. Took early retirement to get away from him. It was about the same time UFA in general started to slide. They sell junk. In the old day thats where you went buy things.
I wont step foot in one again
Sorry to all the people who worked hard for these morons.
I think they are hurting badly in this economy

You don't know the half of it. I worked there for years, both under the Butlers and under UFA and while the UFA-era management gloated about how they were no longer a "Mom and Pop" shop - even as we could all see the crowds getting thinner and thinner every Saturday, year after year- the Butlers, on the other hand, used to gloat about WSS being a license to print money.
Hey John, Glenn and all you interfering UFA beancounters who always tied the hands of the Purchasing team: I guess maybe you weren't so smart after all, were you? Maybe you should have listened to us when we complained about being out of stock on the stuff people wanted - the guns, the ammunition, the fly tying material and hooks, the sink tip fly lines, the affordable camo, the giftware? Do you think you'll get twenty cents on the dollar now for all those cheap Quantum combos? And above all:
I GUESS MAYBE HANGING COLORED TAGS FROM EMPTY PEGS DIDN'T FOOL ANYONE AFTER ALL!!!
