Default Elk in Prairie badlands

Hunting in the Big Muddy Badlands -Willowbunch area in SE Sask. the land is similar to the areas around Turin / Lethbridge but has more trees in some of the Valleys. Valleys wirh prairie grass. Lots of clay hills too and valleys with just buck brush.

New to elk hunting.

Any tips to how to get a bull. Archery Mule deer is on the go at the same time and they are rustling around the area too. Some green oats, alphafa, regrowth wheat and barley , corn, peas and of course native prairie grass.

Where should one be and when. What area to best look for the critters.

Fires are of a big concern so a lot of traffic fo main roads, which sparsely populated. No oilfield roads either.

As always any help is appreciated.

The bush near the feilds with oats, and 2nd cut alfalfa is where I would start, land that not every tom , dick and harry is hunting on. First few mins of light and last few mins are key otherwise you need to set up on trails back in the bush. First few frosts bring appeal to the alfalfa. Good luck

Congratulations on winning a highly coveted tag. I feel for you with it being so dry, my kid and I have antelope tags in 3,6 and 7 and I'm worried about access.
First thing to do is put a good steel shovel and a pressurized water fire extinguisher in the box of your truck. Next tool you'll need is a mountain bike.
You may only need permission from a couple landowners in that area to have more country at your disposal than you can hunt. CO's and the local coffee row should be able to point you in the right direction. With some scouting I would expect you to be able to look over some really big bulls.

I'm hunting a similar area for elk...combined zones 19 & 13 in Saskatchewan.
Only opportunity was to spot and stalk my way within 20 yards of 2 raghorn bulls that were bedded in a bramble of chokcherries in pastureland in 19. Hoping to find a decent bull so passed on them

Never hunted zone 13, south side of Diefenbaker Lake, but as with you, very limited access to river breaks due to dry conditions...that may have improved with this week's rain? Walked lots of nice cover there but no elk sightings.

I used to hunt zone 1 near Scout Lake south of Assiniboia for mule deer in the '80's. Some nice country there..no elk back then though.

I second the idea of having a shovel and good fire extinguisher in your truck.

Good luck with your elk hunt...be sure to post pictures of that big bull you're going to shoot!

I was there in 2012 go south of Glentworth about 5 miles. go east from there (on top of the hills) west is good about 3 miles. Good landowners when i was there. The big fire there will have owners a little aprehensive tho. Good luck.

If he is hunting the Big Muddy and Willow Bunch area, he is drawn in Zone 1.
Your info just put him into Zone 2E.

But you are right about the fire, pretty much all of the land got posted and access is being denied for the most part until we get more rain.........Once all was under control after the flare ups days apart there is close to 7000 acres burned from what i'm told

You're lucky that you can hunt the December season, surely conditions will have improved by then. I can't push antelope too late for fear their sheaths will be off. I wouldn't settle too soon, big bulls should be banded together in Dec.

Nice bull! Just curious if he was tough to recover or if the coyotes found him first?
