Default Bullet Placement

In this case,The late season buck was broardside,of course unaware of my presence. The 6.5 creedmoor, with lots of practice, made this spine shot possible. It was less than 100m.It dropped on the spot.As with most spine shots a finisher was required.Area 316 With permission for access across private land lots of deer.

You purposefully shot the backstrap meat?

That is a good reason for me to try to avoid spine shots.

I’m sure what really happened is he almost missed the deer, hit it in the spine and is now passing it off as marksmanship.

To anyone new to hunting that is viewing the thread most hunters will advise lethal shot placement that minimizes meat damage especially to choice cuts

But they are easy to track when spine shot

Looks to me like a 1-1/2” higher and you would be eating tag soup. I’ve also spined animals before- never intentional.

Hey now. You don't aim a Creedmoor. You launch it and IT decides the best part of the animal to hit.

Aim lower, eat more meat and save the extra bullet.
Congrats on the buck.

To be fair, he is not he only guy I heard of who does it intentionally.

Personally I see the double shoulder shot being not as bad, but not all that much better in terms of meat waste. To each their own.

if you can intentionally hit the spine, why not go for the neck spine. no follow up shot and you don't destroy the backstrap..... shooting it way back there right next to the guts and calling it a good shot when the animal was still alive and needed a 'finisher' shot is simply put, not a good shot. intentional or not. look up hydrostatic shock and the central nervous system. it's a bigger target, and if you pull the shot a bit, you are more likely to still hit vitals that will bring death quickly. google masterpiece archery targets. they have good youtube videos on where the organs are in a deer. where to shoot in different quartering away shots. etc. don't share BS about rear spine being a good target when new hunters are listening. I get that you got excited when the animal dropped on the spot. but there are better ways to make this happen that will end up with the deer dying right away as well. Some bullets will dump their energy into the animal giving a higher chance of hydrostatic shock. others will punch though and give a good blood trail but it's also more likely that the animal will run a bit before the brain shuts down with lack of oxygen. Welcome to hunting.

Even an arrow will drop an animal if shot in a spine .Drop it but usually not kill it instantly . I would not intentionally
shoot there if I have a choice .
Shooting in the bushes or a high grass and it could be the only option to harvest .
I've done quite a few brain shots on a big animals and it was an instant drop/kill, though some might say its not ethical. That is not gonna happen with a spine shot.

Under 100 with a good rest and the right angle with the magical Creedmore you might as well have taken a head shot and saved all that backstrap

Next time try a shot placement further down the spine. I hear the tail shot on a deer is the new thing nowadays, with the animal facing away, preferably.

Commonly known as a Texas heart shot. Requires a great deal of practice,
but when performed with same level of skill and precision as described above results in very little meat damage. I hear this method makes gutting messy so I pass when given an opportunity to make such a shot only to impress my friends!
