Tip #1: Use "circa 1850" to strip the old finish... Don't try to sand the old finish off.

Those kits will have you sanding the finish off. Its very easy to roll edges, and remove more than you want to. The circa 1850 will remove only the finish.

This is what I use! A tooth brush on th checkering works great.

Also what type of finish hand rubbed oil or varnish?

I have played around with truoil, a couple polyurethanes, tung oil, and regular hardware store spar varnish. I think it depends on what look you want, and what kind of a timeline you are hoping for.

OIL.

Once its done..a coat every year or two will keep it looking great foreever.
Varnish will yellow...crack and start flaking.

I use boiled linseed on military stocks, tung or walnut oil on the rest.

About 20 coats all together...wet sanded wth 600 grit at least twice during the process.
