Default Winch sizes for your hunting quads?

I recently purchased a new quad and the previous quads have always had winches...don't want to sound silly but what size of winches does everyone run? 2,000 3,500 4,000?

I don't plan on bogging the quad out it would be simply for getting myself out of a bad spot, winching game out of bad spots etc....quad will be used on mountain hunts to get camp in and out and to haul feed for camp horses.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

As important as the weight rating, and I prefer larger (min 3500 with synthetic cable on most quads, bigger for side by sides and always carry a snatch block and extra cable) so there is less heat when winching, the quality of the winch is very important. Even with Warn, they have two levels of quality. If you use it much or need to rely on it in the worst scenarios, get the top of the line model (currently the Axon, which replaces the previous top of the line Provantage but uses the same mounting brackets). The price difference is not large but having it work when you need it is.

Agree definitely go bigger if you can! Better to have more than enough and not need it then need just a few more ponies when your looking at recovery! Get a front rack box to store the extra things like snatch block cable tree savers shovel etc...

I bought the wife a new king quad 500 and they through in the winch, it's a 3500lb. When I bought my king quad 750 in 2011 they put on a 2500lb. Seems like there going bigger now a days.

Default Quad winch

When it came time to replace ours, I decided to replace it with this unit instead of a winch.
https://www.portablewinch.com/ca_en/pcw3000/
I can use it on the front or back. It also can use it for other projects.

Only downside is having to haul it around. The extra size and then having to haul around the rope as well. I got one too and its very handy for lots of things but i still have a winch behind the bumper of my atv

Get as big as will fit in your machine. Some have space limitations.
Remember, its not only your machine you may have to help out of situations….

Just a heads up the 2019 quad map for the Livingston is now out and it is basically the same for quads as last year. So if you are planning to use your quad in that area forget it as the machines are pretty regulated and you will find you can't use your machine to pull out game.
But if you are planning on going on private land or heading north you will be fine.

I went to the forestry office in Blairmore and got a copy of the map. You probably get a copy at the forestry office in Calgary. it is also posted at the individual boards at some staging areas. I will try to find a link.

2500 on mine has aways been enough to get me out when bogged down and will pull across dry ground with the wheels locked up.
