Tough enough

Is the 225 gr8 accubonds tough enough for the mag velocities of the big 338's,my son and a couple friends are looking at 338 RUMs and the question of best bullet weight and type came up,all input is appreciated thanks,pls keep all negative remarks to yourselves

I would think they are "tough enough". What will the 338 RUMS be used for? Elk, moose deer or all the above? Close range hunting or long? If long range I would look at bullets more in the 300 gr class. Hear good things about the Sierra 300 MK, Berger and 285 gr ELD-M Hornady. I am putting together a 338 EDGE and will be trying the 285 ELD-M and the 300 gr Berger. If you will just be hunting normal ranges of no farther than 4-500 yds then maybe also look into some solid copper offerings, or bullets that don't have the BC needed for long range.

225 gr Accubonds work great in a 338 wm. For a 338 Rum I would be looking at 300 gr bullets

in all my 338 RUM I had run berger 250GR
300 GR if you are punching paper but not for hunting, I had found having to change the mag box and **** around as well as the extra kick not worth it to me.
Also note that the 250gr berger is not the greatest deer bullet at closer range, they seam to just whistle in and out, not a bunch of expansion.
I have never run the EDLX but have heard good things about them.
I think that the 225gr accubond you are limiting yourself in a RUM, but that is just my thoughts.

Thank you for all the reply,yes it will be for moose,elk,and bears mostly,from close to 750-1000 max hope for as close as poss lol,might give the E-tips a go in 225 gr8 first then if that's a bust jump up in weight,to the 250gr or so,does anyone have a good starting point for any of the bullets mentioned,thanks again the boys appreciate the advice

Yes they are great bullets they hold together very well.
Personally as a large framed man myself that has shot a pile of moose and elk I think the 338RUM is overkill and quite punishing to the shooter. Most of my moose have fell victim to a 300 Win Mag or a 300 WSM non have died out of sight quite simply moose die easy. I have shot most my elk with a 270 Win, 270 WSM, 300 WSM and 300 Win Mag. One required some tracking but it was a bad first shot.

I suppose there are differences in rifles that effect felt recoil stock design, weight, barrel length, fit ect. But all things being equal the ultra mag is substantially more. 300 Win mag 2960fps with 180 grain 25.9 ft/lbs vs 338 Ultra mag 2860 with 250 grain 43.1ft/lbs
