Default .308 win muzzle velocity.... reloaders

So, I'm getting 2640 fps for my 165 gn accubonds with consistent .5moa or less groups. Powder is varget 42.4 gn. Long throated sako.

I am wondering what others are producing for speeds out of their 308's.

Just curiosity is all.

I’m shooting 165 grain partitions over 42.6 grains of varget getting 5/16” groups. I haven’t got the velocity yet but that sounds about right for your velocity. I’ll let you know what mine are shooting at when I get a chance.

Sounds correct, 178gr bullets with Varget 43.5 seated out far on my one rifle,,, 2635 ft-per seconds mellow twist rate.

Other factory rifle with same bullet combination 2650 ish.

I load 44.2gr of Varget for the 168's in the factory rifle,,, 2675 ish.

I could load hotter, but I'm all about making the Lapua brass last,,, I keep tabs on the case Web stretch, big thanks to Iclund for sharing this idea with me.

Seating depth jump from lands, and how far out your lands are will change on your case capacity. Some rifles lands are very tight, some are very far. A tight chamber with short throat will hit higher pressure with the same load vs a different gun. A normal load in a loose gun can be over pressure in a tight gun. Barrel length increases velocity too.

What is your barrel length and coal and jump?

I get jam at 2.886 using ELD-M 178gr on the FTR Rig

My sporter Jam with same bullet is 2.953,,, I set them back 20 thou off the lands when single feeding. This is why I'm going to the Grand Slams in 190gr'ers. Ha

Alot of jump when I set them back for bottom feed.

165gr accubonds 45.4gr varget 2.810" COAL 0.045" jump. 2720fps 20 inch barrel.

Same coal and jump with 46.0gr gets me 2760fps out of 20 inch barrel.

I've got 3.29 coal using a comparator. Roughly 2.92 to tip .... which I haven't measured since getting the comparator. This gives me 20thou jump. I guess i could do another mix with more powder but I did see some stick in the bolt using more powder previously.

I have found 20 thou to hit sticky bolt pressures with lower velocities compared to 30 to 50 thou and a bit more powder while still avoiding sticky bolt and getting to higher velocities. There will be a sweet spot balancing between case capacity and jump pressure.

If you try 20 thou more jump it might get a non sticky bolt scenario while still leaving plenty of powder space.

My brass still has sufficient space for 46.0 gr of varget with 2.810" COAL to the tip of 165 accubonds... but maybe your brass walls are thicker than mine and you may have less case volume. Ive not tried more than 46.0 varget as that is the recommended max load.

42.3 varget , 175 smk , 24" bbl = 2600 fps /x2 - m40 1966 retro style and modern rem 700 target , heavily modified

43 gr imr 4895 , m1a/ 22" bbl , 150 gr fmj =2650 fps

41.1 gr rl 15 , kimber flyweight, think 22" bbl ,180 gr sgk = 2400 fps

My plan is to test some 125 and 130gr'ers this winter, there fun to plink with,,, we loaded a few to see what kind of results we'd see at long range,,, we were pretty impressed to see some half decent groups with out any load development at this point.

My friend did ok with 3" to 4" groups at 200 meters off the frozen table,,, 7" to 10" at 430 m.

I fared a little bit better with the Hornady 130 SP bullets from 4 to 600,,,, things started falling apart at the 700 meters,,, the 800 mark was max for most of the other 3 tests...dismal results at 9 to 1 km mark,,, let's call it the big barn door group. Ha... This is where load development will help...mostly due to not buckeling down and failing to pay attention to the light winds.

I can see why my friend suggested using those 180 to 200 gr'ers,,, they fly so nice, good consistency that reach out there,,, of course this is the paper punching thing. What works for my friend and I might not work for the next person.

The day will come when I settle on one bullet for everything,,, but for now it's burn powder time.

2019 is the 190 lead boolitz,,, a quick barrel clean, then off to the races.

Mostly close range plinking stuff with the family,,, let's call it the festive fun shooting stuff.

Variety to fill the winter of good times, that and lots of ice fishing with some Trad archery on the frozen Lake,,, the kids really enjoy this stuff,,, the quad with tracks will be underway when we get back from the East after Christmas.

Lots of Moose in Northern AB,,, but the glory hole to them is here in Northern ON,,, a hard life on the edges of the Canadian Shield produces some might fine beasts.

This is where those Grand Slams will come in handy up here.

Nothing like the big "Pa-Pack" when the bullet tags the Wrappers. Ha,,, our Western group is in-charge of transportation this year,,, the Eastern dudes are hard on stuff. Ha

That's a good velocity for 42.4gr. I would be more than happy with that load!

My hunting load is a 150gr TTSX over 45gr Varget, Win brass, CCI200 at 2.8" OAL. 18.5" barrel IIRC I am getting around 2650fps

45.0gr of Varget under a 130gr TTSX at 3125fps has me doing clover leafs at 100yds.

Agreed. Using 46 grains IMR 4895, CCI mag primer, Lapua brass, 130 Barns TSX 3150 fps out of a 21" barrel. Have been using that load for about ten years. Very good hunting load for yotes to Moose and Elk. Same gun will also shoot 150 grain Hornady SPs at 3000 fps with very good accuracy.
