Default Wet Bait in Bear Trickle Barrel?

Hey AO,

I have a trickle barrel with a single 1” hole and have been filling it with oats and dogfood. I thought it would last at least a week but has been getting smashed and emptied within 3-4 days. I’ve seen bears get the hole at the right downward angle and just poke it with a claw like hitting a coin slot and hitting the jackpot over and over.

I’m wondering if I can add grease or water to the oats/dogfood to make it come out of the hole a bit slower. I don’t want to make the bait congeal together and be impossible for the bears to get out though. Has anyone wetted bait in a trickle barrel with any luck?

Thanks

We pour oil on oats all the time, let it soak in.

Ive never used this method of baiting but seems like a good idea ...if its working don't fix it ,just plan on filling more often ..maybe reduce size of the hole to 3/4" . Adding water you run the risk of sprouting the oats or molding them ,neither will allow them to run . Molasses would have to be used in very small amount and mixed thoroughly or it would cake ..Good luck and let us know how you solve it .
