Question Anyone using a 338-06 A-Square?

Just curious about this one and how it performs? Anyone have any personal experience with it? Im thinking of building one on a M70.

Thats one cartridge that just about does it all. Easy to load for, great bullets available, easy to shoot, and very hard on game animals within reasonable shooting distances out to 400 yds. Im thinking you will luv it !

Thumbs up

I have a 6-284 and seriously thinking of this as a next to compliment the little 6.

I have a semi-custom Rem 700 CDL that I had re-barrelled to 338-06 by AC Douglas Gunsmithing in Saskatoon. He put on a magnum contour SS Benchmark barrel, finished at 24". I put a Leupold 3-9x40 VX2 on it, with the LR reticle.
My handloads consist of Weatherby brass, CCI 200 primers, 58 grains of Ramshot Big Game under a 210 grain Nosler Partition. If I do my part, it gives me sub-MOA groups. I took it to Africa last year and it performed admirably.

My father in law had a Cooper for a while, very nice shot great.
If anyone is in need of some brass I have about 45 Weatherby ones, new, just need to pull the bullets.
Would trade for something I use.

Built mine(338-06 Ackley Improved) off a Sako m75 Greywolf with a new PacNor supermatch grade stainless barrel cut to 24”. Built it to shoot heavier bullets. 225 grain ABs and TTSXs with H414 and Federal 210 primers shoots quite nicely. Has a Leupold VX3 3.5-10x40 scope one gunmetal Grey.

When fireforming new 338-06 A-Square brass with medium/hot loads; it shoots and groups very consistently as well.

I would like to built another off a Sako m75 stainless IV action, mounted in a MacMillan Edge lightweight stock and go with a #2 or #3 barrel , fluted and cut to 22” to shoot 180-185gr TTSX or ABs. I have a VX2 4-12x40ao scope with LRD duplex waiting for a home. Be a sweet mountain backpack rifle.

Even though very capeable of taking moose/elk etc with the 6-284....I would like the 338-06 A-square for say a moose/elk only gun...just saying...but not much a fan of getting punched in the face so would have to ensure she was balanced just right etc for a push in the shoulder and not a smack upside the head..

Default 338-06

I built one on a win70 ,,50fps slower than my 338wm blauser ,,incredible performer ..no kick 185grn nosler .. make sure your bullet is close to lanze for best accuracy ,,,1\2 groups or less all day long ...enjoy

Smile 338-06

I had an older Rem. 700 BDL in 30-06, took it to Ron Smith and rebored it. Magic cartridge, moose this fall 261 yds. DRT. used 225 gr. Horn. sp. Did the trick, loaded with WW760-H414. It's a keeper. Brass formed easily from Lapua 06. KC.

I have one built on a ss rem 700 action, benchmark #4 barrel cut to 22" and glass bedded into a McMillan stock.
I shoot 210 gr nosler partition and barnes ttsx through it. Both are very accurate and deadly in this rifle.

Depends on what you're hunting and where you're hunting. Love my Whelen. Extremely accurate with 225gr Accubonds. Lots of thump if needed.

Flip a coin. There is a better selection of .338 bullets though.
That was the decider for me at least.

I had one and for it’s purpose it did very good. It certainly hits with a lot of authority. Ended up taking a Northern AB Bison and an elk with it. Knocked both of them off their feet.
