Well yesterday me and my brother headed out for a quick overnight trip to our local bear hole to start filling some tags. We drove up the mountain as far as we could, set up our tents and headed out for the evening hike at about 6pm. After hiking an hour and not seeing much sign or fresh grass yet we thought we may be a little early/ a little high in elevation...we turned around and headed back uphill to camp and about 15 minutes after turning around we both looked up the steep cut block above us and their he was...he could hear us walking but evidently couldn’t see us and the wind was good...We checked to make sure their were no cubs around and I set up for a shot..He would not turn broadside so I opted for front chest shot. First shot was a exactly where I wanted it go but since it was such a steep uphill shot the first round went through the windpipe and out the back of neck...the bear started running sideways and my follow up shot went just over his back..he attempted to climb a tree but was in bad shape..third round to the spine quickly put him down and he was down and out in seconds...after a 2km uphill pack out back to camp we were rewarded with some snowbank-cooled bud lights and hit the hay! Couldn’t be happier with how it worked out..going to be some good bear burgers this year. Next weekend we’ll be back to hopefully fill my brothers tag!
Congratulations on a great hunt. I'm heading up into the mountains next weekend for a couple of nights, solo likely to look for a bear. I'll be going into our favourite spring bear camp. I'm late this year by one weekend so I'm hoping the extra snow we got this winter will be making everything nice and green.
