Looking for GPS capable of texting
Hi Folks. Looking to purchase a GPS unit that can be used to send a text and check in at home when out and about. I know nothing of make model or what to expect in price for one. Looking for something that will text from somewhere a cell phone can’t. Like I said, I know nothing about them. What’s out there?

I have a delorme inreach.
it can do the whole SOS stuff as well, but you can also text to the emergency center to let them know why its an SOS. (i have never confirmed this though)
anyways it takes awhile to text on it, as you select one letter at a time but it does work. I text my wife letting her know I am safe and sound. She really appreciates it. And she can text me as well.
The plans are monthly so you can change your plan for hunting one month to unlimted texts, then drop it to nothing the next.

Your GPS units are approximately 600 to $800, for the the new Garmin 66 I it's around 900 plus your plan

I have an inreach mini. $20/month once activated and can suspend service free of charge indefinitely. 500 bucks or so upfront for the unit, but no regrets buying. Worth the peace of mind when hunting solo in grizz country, and for keeping in touch on overnight trips.

Can you set it up so the service could be a few selective months?

Yes.
You do pay an activation fee if you cancel for a month then reactivate it.
If you do a hold you only pay 4 bucks a month I believe (i would have to check my bill) so depending on how many months you want it you can decide which is better for you

Yup, I activated mine in late August, and suspended it in December. No charges while service is suspended.

Garmin inreach explorer+
cant recommend it enough!! I offroad motorbiked through mongolia for a month this past summer and was looking for a GPS that could do mapping as well as text with/do SOS. In the early spring around may campers village usually has an annual sale, i got the GPS 20% off. I got a basic plan from garmin for $20/month which included SOS and 5 preprogrammed text messages. Additional custom messages had a small fee per message. But every night id check in with the misses back in canada with a preprogramed text message and she could send ones back at no cost. Insane battery life also

I've been thinking of an In-Reach. Never know when it might save your hide.
It also would have saved a very embarrassing day for me a few years ago.
Horrible feeling when you get 'found' by search and rescue even though everything was fine. We had a little wreck and my partner gave up, had to spend a night out with VERY limited gear. We were fine but had no service to notify anyone of our plan. Probably the most humbling experience of my life and a waste of very important resources.

InReach! Pair it with a smart phone for regular texting.
I have used it all over the world...

I have used Spot in the past but switched to a Delorme Inreach Explorer and haven’t looked back. The two way messaging is a lifesaver. Pairs to my phone through the Garmin app and makes texting and mapping much easier. Recommend.
