Default Good WMU to get a boy a Mulie Buck in Limited Time

A very gracious AO member who has priority 13 for Antlered Mule Deer offered to put my 15 year old son on his tag with a youth partner licence so he can harvest his first buck. Problem is that neither of us are big mulie hunters, and my time in fall is limited to weekends because of my job. Any suggestion for a wmu within a 4 hr drive of Edmonton where a kid would have a good chance to tag a buck as we need to apply soon? Not looking for a monster by any stretch, just looking for a wmu that has decent numbers where permission may be possible, if such a thing even exists. Any suggestions would be appreciated. PM would work fine too.

UHHHHHH
A P15 should be spent looking for a monster. I wouldn't want anything less than a 180+
Some big guns out there if you start looking.
Who is this most honourable fellow who is sharing this tag? What a guy!!!!!
A/O member of the year in my books!

The plan was to have the young man get a youth partner tag for my trophy pronghorn tag last year, but the hunt timing didn't work out. With a more flexible season for mule deer, we will try and make this happen this fall. Another new hunter filled my antlered moose tag at Camp Wainwright last fall, as I am trying to share the opportunity with new hunters that don't have the priority to draw the tags.

Well done.. Its always such a treat to take the young guys out..
I think I enjoy it more watching them tip over something.
My Son is presently soaking up all he can in order to use everyone of my points...
Seems I may have got him addicted to this stuff...

Good on you!

118 and 102 hold alot of mule deer. And its also mostly grazing lease so you just need to contact in advance. I pulled 118 last year for my first crack at mule deer. Even i was able to locate multiple bucks some of them decent. I did not connect as im not comfortable with longer shots i was presented with. 305 yards was as close as we got. If you do better job stalking in can easily get closer. We made every mistake but mostly skylining ourselves the deer are on you immediately. And the bigger bucks once see you can watch the bounding off for miles. Im addicted i wish i could hunt that area every fall. Its a 4-5 year zone others may chime in with better zones.

Elkhunter11, this is one of the kindest gestures I have read on here in a very long time. I tip my hat to you and hope that more will do the same for our youth. I took my 10 year old mulie hunting with me last year and he had the time of his life. We stayed in my wall tent in late Nov and it was -25 at night but he loved it all. Anyway, when my priority builds again, l will do as you are as I get such a thrill of watching young kids out hunting for their first animal.
Anyways, good on you and best of luck to the young lad on his first mulie.

Cheers,
SS

Dont ruin the boy, lol let him shoot the first deer he likes. Nothing will measure up in the future if he gets a wall hanger right out of the gate.
A real nice gesture elkhunter11.

My thoughts as well. Booner out of the gate.

Well done elk hunter. I’ve never shot one but looking forward to going on a southern mule deer hunt.

There’s lots of mule deer in the province why not let home put in for his own draw and wait like a lot of us did. I guess I look back when I started hunting over 30 years ago I looked forward to putting in for draws with Dad even though it took awhile to get. If he gets a chance to shoot a deer with someone else’s tag will it be the memory he wants. In a world that youth feel entitled maybe a wait is not a bad idea.

Wow! You could suck the fun out of DisneyLand.

I only see good from this and elkhunter11 is giving a great gift to a fellow hunter. The icing on the cake is he is giving it to a youth hunter.

To find any negativity in this gesture is beyond words.

Nice job elkhunter11! Sn2 hope your son has a great hunt!

Do you celebrate Christmas and birthdays with your kids? If so, why? It's not as if they really earned those gifts. Save the money. They might become entitled. Maybe, just maybe, Elk's gift/gesture will provide an example that he will emulate someday.... Sigh.

Dont abandon ship on this one , I agree with what you said .. Yes it's a kind and noble gesture that elkhunter 11 is doing but there is also the other entitled side of the picture . A number of questions come to mind , such as is this gonna be the only chance the boy has to hunt mule deer ? Nothing wrong with having him learn the patience of having to wait , he may even appreciate the hunt more .As for smoking a booner right out of the gate , thats definitely a mistake as it makes everything else a lesser accomplishment .

Im not gonna take sides on this one as I see what both parties are saying but sometimes kids have it a little too easy in this day and age . Elk you are to be commended for your graciousness .

Why would the name on the tag in any way tarnish the memory of a hunt? I could understand if someone used their wife or child to draw a tag, and then illegally filled that tag for them, but that isn't the case here. If anything, sharing the hunt with friends and family will provide even more memories. I have no plans to use the tag myself, so why shouldn't a young hunter enjoy the benefit from my applying for 13 years? I enjoyed watching a friend and new hunter harvest my moose with a partner license last fall, and I will enjoy being there when this young man harvests his first antlered mule deer using my tag. One of my most memorable moments from last fall, was watching the young man shoot the last goose of the day, on our final goose hunt of the season. The rest of our party lay there guns down, and watched and cheered as that last goose was harvested. We will all remember that moment and recall it for years to come. It was no different when the young man shot his first pheasant over my dog. When the dog locked up on point, the last thought in my mind was shooting the bird myself, I wanted the young man to shoot that bird. And when the bird fell, we all celebrated the event.
Perhaps I hunt for different reasons than you do, but having a new hunter fill my tag , is even more enjoyable than filling the tag myself. And the fact that this young man enjoys being out in the field with us so much, makes it that much more enjoyable for me.

For some people the antler size of an animal is a very minor part of the hunt and to judge the quality of a hunt by the size of the animal is just wrong .
However that is my opinion only and I know it's not shared by others .

This may not come across well, but in all good there may be some bad...

Good on you Elk, but as well your part of the problem..... Why are you gifting your tags ? These three tags are ones people may now have to wait a decade or more and your able to gift on a partner or youth licence..

I have mixed feelings...

I am not gifting the tag. I applied for 13 years , not drawing a tag, in order to be able to draw it now, and I will be a part of the hunt. What I am doing , is providing a youth hunter the opportunity to share the hunt with me, and to pull the trigger in my place, as I watch. It is a partner license, and I would be sharing the hunt with a partner.. It's not like I am just giving someone the tag and walking away, and I would be opposed to allowing that to happen. I don't want to see people that have no actual interest in the hunt ever being able to obtain tags, just to give them away, without participating in the hunt.

I know exactly what you are doing Elk... Very nice gesture but when its multiple permits / tags that are highly regarded, well its open to criticism. If your health went sideways and you have these high priority's, I could understand and support with open arms.

So would it make a difference if we executed the hunt in exactly the same manner, but I pulled the trigger instead, while the youth sat next to me? As for my health, if I had to stay home due to health reasons, the partner could not legally be out in the field shooting the animal.

I did not mean to start a discussion with you Elk, so this will be my last response..

Yes it would be different if you pulled the trigger... This young guy would get everything the hunt has to offer other than being the "shooter".

If it was just about the experience, I would think the title of this thread may read different, or never have been created
