The lake is going to get gnarly after this snow. I imagine dudes will be smashing hidden ice heaves like crazy. Basically going from smooth as a whistle to a surprise death trap out there.

About a foot but the wind has made some good drifts out there.

Take it easy and follow tracks whenever possible. The lake I'm fishing for lakers in northern B.C. lately has been the opposite. Barely any snow making it tough to run sleds and variable single digit ice thickness keeping the Ranger shorebound.

It has actually been really interesting this year being at different lakes within 75 kms of each other and they have really different snow depths on the lakes. I don't think I have seen it vary this much before. I think it has a lot to do with the wind while it was snowing in the area I am in however I could be totally wrong too.

As said already follow other tracks and only go off of them to fish is that safest bet.

If you follow others tracks or packed down trails you should be ok. Bring a shovel and anything else that can get you moving along (Large buddy) lol. The Rav is well all wheel drive on the best of days and low ground clearance might give you issues in drifted in areas. We are going into some warm temps and come mid day/afternoon under direct sun well the snow gets slushy like. Hopefully you got good tires too that can bite.

Good luck.

It does have new winters on it, the ground clearance is the only thing that has me worried. Have tow straps, shovel and a set of tire chains.
Hopefully thats enough to get me out there. Won't be touring around thats for sure.
Thanks for the info. If you see a guy in a Rav cussing and throwing stuff, be lad and come on over and give me a pull out. Haha

Will do, have had many help me out and returning the favour is always a priority.

I can vouch for rav4 performance. My wife’s rav4 has done just as well as my levelled Tacoma in deep snow. (Pushing snow with her bumper through trails.). The rav4 is just a lower tank. Lol Make sure to turn off traction control. Keep a shovel close by if you get hung up. As mentioned above, drifts might hang you up unexpectedly.

Made it out without a hitch. Threw tire cables on before even getting on the ice. Tested it out on the roads out here first and then decided to break off a bit into the untouched powered. Was breaking trail without an issue. Just kept up the momentum and only stopped where the snow was only a few inches deep.
Got quite a few looks from other guys on the lake. Haha
Already had a laker on.
Thanks for all the info guys.

So sitting on the lake, lots of chasers, that’s ok if they don’t bite as it seems they break off and then hit the deadstick!!!
Lots of 24-28 inch but nothing big….yet
Also getting reports of trucks not just getting stuck but buried real good breaking trail.
I am seeing 2 feet to 2 inches of snow but the drifted in areas are catching trucks.
Guess the lake needs to have fun too!
Calm, warm and catching so it’s all good.
130 fow but tomorrow I am going to fish an area that drops to 170 fow just to play more of the water columns.

Well today so far has been the opposite from yesterday, ok I am in 160 fow give or take 10 fow but man these lakers are sure having a go at these spoons.
Sitting on or near the bottom, mark a fish and reel up, bam on like clockwork.
Change them out every 20 minutes to let them soak in the sun then just rinse and repeat.
Threw everything at them and caught a few but the spoon made a huge difference. Now just gotta catch one gooder but still having fun.
Deadstick today so far was just that, dead! Yesterday it was the juice not so today.

Another thread got me thinking about ice travel and things that catch people off guard. The Marina is one. Being used frequently to access the lake but now into March, the plus temps during the day, direct sunlight on the Marina structure well it gets very unstable quickly with the ice getting thin real quick in and around that structure.
PP is an access area I use often and that boat launch can be questionable too. Talked to a fella a few weeks ago and he said he dropped his front end in at the launch when going off the ice yet others had no problem this was a few years ago. Well your speed approaching the shore can actually blow the ice up in front of you resulting in a wet vehicle at the least so slow down.
March madness can be just that.

Well another great day on the lake. Plus temps , slight breeze, and yup the sun.
Started off in 60 fow on top of a shelf but only got one in three hours so went 50 yards and into 160 fow as I was marking lots in 120-140fow well that move paid off big time as it was literally fish after fish for two hours on the spoons. Every fish I changed the lure out and let it soak in the sun. Those super glow Len Thompson’s are game changers down deep.
Cut the evening short as I helped pull out a couple that had high centred thier truck crossing the lake. Those ice heaves are buried under snow and the snow is like slush come mid day so yup very little traction at all. The skidoo Scandic SWT in low was enough to get them out but barely.
Tried my grandsons rod out and yup first laker that hit well the handle blew up so now I got to find him a new one.

Oops!

Where the truck once was!!!

Those areas are good, lots of truck tracks in and around those areas.
The problem starts for the most part going across the lake out into the open where the heaves are hidden under drifted snow but you can actually see them if you go slow and watch the surface carefully.

Yesterday I got into a bunch of lakers just under 30 inches which was fun but I had to move to deeper water as I found them either suspended or on or near the bottom.

Deadstick got nothing yesterday but some days it’s the juice.

If you got UV tubes, spoons it can be the difference between catching and watching especially going deep.

I give them two good hook sets then bring them up at a speed so they can burp and clear their air bladder, if not well you got a balloon and probably a dead fish.

Good luck.

This was just a fatty full of bait fish as he puked them up all over the place so he chummed for me.

This guy came up from 160fow and on the screen you could see him burping many times on his way up.
Full of life and good to go!

I think I witnessed a historic event today. It’s not my fish, but a good friend and his son caught some truly iconic fish today. One being the biggest I’ve ever seen come out of cold lake. It beats any fish ever registered in any of the summer/winter tournies. It’s their story to tell and I hope they share it here.

All I can say is wow.

Post up a pic please?

Biggest one we got to date was two years ago 38 inches open water trolling and dreaming

It’s so nice seeing the big ones go back.

I'm curious to see this fish! I did see a decent sized laker a young man was holding but was no where near iconic. Wondering if this is the same fish we are speaking about? If not, a few big ones were caught yesterday.
