Default Gas fireplace pilot light

Anybody give me any insight on a gas insert we have in our house. There's a switch to turn pilot off and on. We shut it off during the summer months. If we leave it off we can still turn on fireplace with remote. So what advantages are there to leave pilot light on ?

If the pilot is off the fireplace will not light. Turning the pilot off will save a little

Mine has a cold weather kit, switch to turn the pilot light on when cold out. Stops condensation build up, otherwise it can freeze and then will not light period. Only need it certain times of the year when cold & high humidity. Mine is mounted on a outside wall with a very short intake/exhaust.

That is an IPI (Intermittent Pilot Ignition) (as opposed to a CPI (Continuous Pilot Ignition)). As Dirtdiver23 said, you should leave the pilot on in the colder months to keep the system warm and easier to start.

The previous posters have it correct, if yours has an automatic pilot there is no benefit to have it running in the summer, it does help to run in the winter though.
