In my .270 + 8mm I run Hornadys SSTs. A beaut of a mess.

Default Bullet

The winchester 180 gr power point in 30-06 was extremely effective on moose, our hunting group used them for many years all over nfld. Of course it depends on the hunter waiting for the right shot, no pot shotters here. A moose hit through the lungs, will drop like a rag doll, at 500-600m no problem. In many cases the moose was dead as a door nail when we arrived at the drop site.
All the groups carried 30-06 and used this bullet, the idea being if it works why try something else.

I've been shooting Barnes TSX for over 10 seasons now, I've been pretty happy with their performance.

I agree. My Dad and I have used this bullet to take 5 moose, and one elk. If you need a RELIABLE bullet in the 30.06, you can't go wrong with this one.

Speer Grand Slams. Never found a reason to try something different in my 7mm rm. Same bullets and almost the same load for about 45 years. That means I am old enough to make a mistake on the number of years but it is a significant number. 175 gr pills for me.

I started out with Federal Fusion 175gr in my 7MM, but switched two years ago to Nosler Partition 165gr. I now use this in both 7MM and 308Win, the latter of which I take out most trips.

Between my son and I we've taken 7 deer with GMX bullets over the last 3 years,80gr .243 for him,165gr .30-06 for me,,no complaints wutsoever, most were pass thrus but did recover 2 bullets, one in an off shoulder, the other in a hip from a head on chest shot, both were 95% + weight retention.
Mind you,all but one of those deer were less then 200 yards so relatively high impact velocities.
I'd have no issues using either with confidence out to 500y with 2000fps give er take being the rule of thumb for minimum impact velocity.....which is a good 100 farther then I've ever shot any deer in nearly 40 years of hunting, lol,so yea, they do just fine for my liking.

If I was loading up for a hunt where there was a reasonably good chance of needing to take a shot at 500+,ie;maybe a mountain hunt or bald ass Prairie Mulies or antelope wutever,I'd opt for something more frangible with great BCs like the ELD-X probably.....but again....I've never had to shoot past 400 in my life and could count the deer I've shot beyond 300 on one hand soooo...not too concerned about it.

Partitions, accubonds, interlocks, ballistic tips, ELDx and sst’s have all killed game effectively for me. These days I hunt with either accubonds or eldx.

Not available for reloading. Only in factory Winchester Supreme Elite ammo.

I like the XP3 bullet. Tried them when I ran out of reloads and didn’t have more made prior to a trip. A buddy uses the 180gr out of his 300WSM

I will stick to my Accubonds- I have lots for all my calibers. The TTSX close second for the one rifle I reloaded them for-both the ABs and TTSXs shot great

17 HH, 17 FB, 22 H, 223, 22-250 ALL use Hornady V/Z max or the 50 grain Horn SPSX
221 FB 40 Grain Sierra Blitzking 3600 FPS
257 Bee 117 Grain Hornady 3500 FPS
7-08 139 grain Hornady SP 2800 FPS
7x57 139 Grain BTSP Hornady 2900 FPS
7x57R 154 Hornady Sp 2700 FPS
7 Rem Mag 162 Grain Horn BT Match or Amax 3100 FPS
7 ULtra 162 Grain BT Horn Amax 3450 FPS
308 Win 130 Grain Barnes TSX 3150 FPS
300 Win Mag 165 BTSP Hornady 3400 FPS
338 Fed 180 Nosler Accubond TSX 2800 fPS
38-55 265 grain Cast 25 Brinell 1800 fps
375 Win 225 grain Hornady FP 2400 FPS
375 Ruger 270 Grain Barnes TSX 2800 FPS
45-70 350 Grain Hornady RN 2000 fps
460 Weatherby 500 grain SP Hornady or Hornady RN Solids 2500 fps

There was quite a lot of trials of different bullets in many of these cartridges for both accuracy and killing effectiveness. Tried Accubond, Partition, Speer, Sierra, Barnes and Hornady in pretty much all of them as well as Woodleigh and Orxyz in the 7x57, the 375 and 460. As you can see Hornady is the top bullet in overall usage, followed by Barnes. So my answer is, it really does depend on the cartridge, velocity and how far you are shooting.

Accubonds and TTSXs are my favorites.

I used specific Ballistic Tips on deer size game. (120gr 6.5mm and 120gr 7mm).

If I had to pick one for everything forever I would grab the Barnes.

It all depends what you are hunting. Deer don't need something that holds up to a thick skin. Something like a game king or interlock or really any bullet that hold up decently well will expand nicely on a deer.
For elk, moose etc, something like a ttsx, partition or accubond have worked nicely. My favourite may be handloaded sierra blitzkings in my 204 on gophers though😁

To be totally honest, I have shot everything from woodchucks to moose sincecaround 1966 with all kinds of cup and core bullets in calibers from all the manufacturers and monolithic bullets from Batnes and several custom made bullets.
If the cartridge/rifle set up is correct and within the parameters of its intended velocity and the shooter's skills are where they should be, danged near all will kill well with a couple of exceptions .
There is no perfect bullet however .

I have a friend that killed a pile of game with that bullet and the 300 win mag. Including a brace of Cape buffalo.

Any big game bullet that feeds the rifle to make small groups and take game effectively....if something works on paper and has issues when it meets flesh/bones then I only use it to punch holes in paper.

And I have not had a batch that any of my rifles didn't like too, shoot, group and take home game type bullet.

I’m a Barnes guy myself after shooting an elk at 50 meters a few years ago, terminal damage was catastrophic. Trying a handloads with 200 grain LRX’s in my 300 Win Mag this year, will see how they perform when I get to shoot something with them.
