Default Vehicle Emergency Kit Thread: 2013 Edition

With all of the discussions on people being stuck, breakdowns, weather related travel issues and such I thought it was time for an ever-popular emergency gear thread. What's in your trunk, or behind or under your seats? Its a good time to make sure its actually still in there....

I work out of my truck, usually in the middle of nowhere. Usually have enough food and clothes to last a few days.

Small story here. Last winter, -40, had to take my half ton, couldn't find keys for my diesel. Didn't bother to look at fuel gauge until I was leaving work empty. Went as far as I could before running out of gas. No one else at work running a gas truck, called a buddy to bring me some gas, no problem be there in 2 hours. So I'm on a logging road 10 at night, need heat. What can I burn. Pull out first aid kit, bottle of rubbing alcohol and cotton balls. Find empty pop can, rig up small stove to burn cotton ball soaked in alcohol, burned hot enough to keep the Windows frost free.

Now I make sure I always keep a bottle of rubbing alcohol in the truck. Can work great as a heat source, also works good for melting ice on wipers or trailer plugs. Plus, only costs a buck a liter from the dollar store

Well...its all behind the seat but admittedly not all of it is in the cab...

Bottled water,
Dehydrated soup
Whisperlite
Small cook set
Flashlight
Matches, and lighter and flint
24-48 hours of spare medication
Bivy bag
Sleeping bag
wool blanky
Tarp(2)
Light Rope
Axe
Spade
A full set of wool outer wear...and socks
My big furry hat
extra mitts and gloves
My chain winch
120 feet of chain
150 feet of heavy rope
tire chains
hessian
jack
tire tools
block and tackle
snatch block
tow strap
jumper cables
basic tool kit... combination wrenches, pliers, some sockets and screw drivers
Mechanics wire
Fencing pliers
10 gallons spare fuel
1 liter of naptha
machette
bungy cords
spare batteries
my GPS
hurricane pegs to use for a ground anchor
Toilet paper
a couple big garbage bags
Fire extinguisher
First aid kit
...and other odds and sods.

Being stuck sucks.

It sucks even worse if you are hungry, cold, thirsty and without the means to do anything for yourself.

If I'm hitting the bush or the moountains... I usually throw in spare boots...more food and water

I suppose I should ante in: Wife's car: first aid kit, two 'car blankets', small shovel, candles, heavy wool socks. I'll have to check to make sure there's some emergency munchies in there.

My plumbing van is already loaded to the gills with tools, parts & first aid so I just have to ensure adequate cold weather clothing is in it. When I had a 4x4 I also kept a duffel bag with extrication & winching gear in it: slings, tow strap, rope, big D-rings and such.

Have an auto charger for your cell phones too people, it might just save your bacon.

Edit: good call on the spare meds Big Daddy, I don't take any but I'm sure it would be pretty serious for many to be without. Also, what's a 'hessian'?

Extra layer of clothes, shovel, tow rope, first aid kit. E-kit has space blanket, candles, matches. Always have water, bit of beef jerky and a protien bar or snickers or two. Depending on how far off the road I am heading I will make sure to take extra gas as well. I put on 70-90 K a year for work and do not want to be stranded in a tight spot. I figure I can tough it out overnight pretty easy if I have to.

This is the bare minimum IMO.

I like my small snow shovel and bag of gravel too.

THIS!!!

When I was stuck last Saturday, plugging my phone into the charger made the difference from "searching for service" ,to one or two bars and being able to get a text out. It was half charged, but plugging it in gave it just a little boost.

Environment Canada has issued a travel warning due to snowfall and bad road conditions.

They suggest that anyone travelling in the current icy conditions should ensure they have the following:

Shovel
Blankets or sleeping bag
Extra clothing including hat and gloves
24 hours worth of food
De-Icer
Rock Salt
Flashlight with spare batteries
Road Flares or Reflective Triangles
Full gas Can
First Aid Kit
Booster cables

I looked like an effin’ idiot when I got on the bus this morning

20l of gas up to 60L if I'm somewhere remote, a few tow slings, clevis's, big grain scoop for moving lots of snow fast. gloves, jumper cables, air compressor, tire plug kit, first aid kit, fire extinguisher, bunch of tools, knives, mitts, toque, fire starting stuff (aka bic lighters), sometimes a chainsaw, sometimes an axe, cell phone, vhf radio, chargers, cell phone booster, flashlight, headlamp, batteries for everything, and someone always knows where I am and when I should be checking in.
