Sure looks like cat, but I can't make my brain judge the size compared to the pen in the pic. Could be a younger cougar or a Lynx.

Just a guess, small bear or very big heavy cat.

But I don't know which.

5 toes across the leading edge of the print = plantigrade mammal = bear. On dogs and cats, the 5th toe is the dew claw, and is not visible in the track.

Bears and Mustelidae (Weasel Family) have 5 toes. Cats and dogs have 4 toes. I believe I see 5 toes, most likely a bear.

We need an "other" section of the poll.

I was thinking a sasquatch badger hybrid.

The act of producing such a hybrid would be incredibly unpleasant to observe.

The answer is four and five respectively and I have the photos to prove it.

So far as I know, all cats and dogs, wild or not show four toes, all others soft footed animals show five.

I have been assembling a collection of photos I have taken of animal tracks.
I have real clear shots of a Lynx track showing all the toes clearly, there are four. I have one photo of a bear track, it is not clear so I have to rely on memory and my memory isn't so good these days but I'm pretty sure they have five toes.

I don't know if it's my eyes or the photos but i can't be sure if those tracks have four or five toes.

I can tell the soils is sandy, and crusted from recent rains, I can tell that the animal was not in a hurry but it appears that it was traveling up hill at least to some degree, but I can't make out the upper edge well enough to be sure if there is a toe print there or not.

I know that Black Bears will not always show claw marks, especially in soils such is in these photos.

But the best I can do is a 70 or 80 percent chance that it's a Bear and 100% it is either a Bear or a Cougar.

It is definitely not a Lynx or a Bobcat, they are way too light to leave a track that deep in that soil.

The Lynx tracks I mentioned were taken where a lynx had walked on drifted snow that did not hold up a Coyote that crossed the same patch of snow around the same time. The Lynx tracks were less then a 1/4 inch deep, the Coyote sank to it's knees.
