From the regs:

SPECIAL HUNTING AREAS
In WMUs 212 and 248 the hunting of game birds is only permitted with bows and arrows, cross-bows, shotguns or a falconry bird. Cross-bows cannot be used to hunt migratory birds.

-----

In another section referring to the Strathcona deer hunt in WMU 248 it says shot gun is allowed after a certain date.
"shotgun in that portion of WMU 248 within the Counties of Strathcona and Leduc between the following dates: O25 - D7."
-----

So it sounds like only certain areas of WMU 248 allow shotguns and after certain dates. I think a call to Edmonton F&W district office would be the best advice.

Just remember to check with the municipality / police / RCMP to make sure you can discharge a firearm where you want to hunt. Even though the regs allow shotgun use, does not mean you are allowed to discharge in every part of that WMU. 20 years back we went through all the proper channels, got the discharge permits from the Police to make sure there were absolutely no issues. We lit up and area near edmonton and then 5 or 6 police and F&W officer showed up lights a blazing. Despite having all the paper work to prove it was a 100% legal hunt, they took all our birds, news reporters there, etc. After a couple of weeks F&W returned us all our birds, frozen solid with guts in and feathers on as if that was acceptable... got an apology but ruined a perfectly legal hunt.

Make sure you are legal, and even then, watch out!

You can use a shot gun in all areas of 248 for game birds during the entire season for which they are open as long as it is legal in that area

Check with the county as well as the RCMP. Different counties have different bylaws.

There is a late season primitive hunt for big game. Within 212, the Calgary bow zone, there are multiple "hot spots" for bird hunters including a pheasant release site so I don't see any issue with it.

Sounds like checking in with the police/municipality worked great for you.
