Default Ruger 77/22 hornet

I'm looking at a Ruger 77/22 hornet, standard model wood/blued.

I have read they have/had accuracy issues.

Not sure if the current production ones still have the issues or not.

Anyone have experience with the 77/22 hornets?

Thanks

I have owned several. I found glass bedding the action and the 1st inch of barrel and floating the rest made big improvements . I for one would not hesitate to by one . The triggers can be worked over or replaced as the factory setting is not good . I have also made some into 22K hornet and that conversion is a dandy. . I have shot coyotes with the 40 gr v max at a few hundred yards with no issues.

Good luck

It took some work to get decent accuracy out of my Ruger 17 Hornet.

One magazine fed with no alterations . Others fed fine with a very small amount of metal removed of the sides of the feed lips .

Any i rifles have had would easily shoot 3/4 and often 1/2 inch at 100 yds . Mine were all spotter barrels

It’s a very over looked cartridge . It’s a powder mizer , usually 10- 13 grs per round . Barrels don’t get very hot when shooting in gopher patch.

I MUCH prefer the CZ 527 in 22 Hornet. Far less trouble getting them to shoot. I have tuned 4 or 5 Rugers so they would shoot well, (one need a whole new barrel that Ruger supplied, all needed bedding and most need their bolts shimmed) but it is quite a lot of work to get to where the Browning, Zastava, Savage or CZ is right out of the box. They are a nice looking gun but far too expensive to need that much tuning.

Know a lady that has one, very important to make sure the rims are ahead of the cartridge below when loading, or it's gonna jam.

I have had a 77/22H for over 16 years now. Stainless/laminate with considerable load development done. Most loads average under 1 MOA. For example, one of my favorite loads uses the 40 gr Speer and Little Gun. The load workup for average of three, three shot groups; .375 .495, and .875 for an average of 0.56.

I've looked at these guns so many times, they're VERY good looking things. I talked myself into/out of them at least 5-6 times before deciding on a CZ 527 in 17 Hornet. A shooter right out of the gate, just over 1/2" @ 100 yards using Hornady factory 20gr. ammo.

I don't need 2 hornets (don't even "need" one ) but I'd read about so many accuracy issues with those Rugers that I permanently parked the idea myself.

My wife bought me one Christmas '03. Walnut/blued shot a few targets absolutely deadly right out of the box. Gopher patch, muskrat swimming, beaver in the poplars, close 'yotes, thing is deadly. 500 rounds in, still love it. Hope you have the same experience. Good luck!

Buy the single follower from James Calhoon.
P.S. make sure you close all the windows in the truck when you take apart the CZ mag. as the bits from the mag. go about 25 feet into the tall grass.
I love my .17 hornet in CZ. I would like to have the same in .22 Hornet. I would not however buy one in Ruger, they have to many issues. Like others have stated my rifle out of the box with factory ammo was an easy 3/4" or less rifle with hand loads it is better. I like 25gr. Hornady bullets with a weeee bit of H4198 .

My 77/22 Hornet was the most accurate .224 rifle I ever had. It shot sub-1/2" groups regularly. It was the heavier stainless laminated version and it was a laser beam. I sold it to buy a .204 that's almost as good... but not quite.

I have 77/22 K hornet, accuracy improved dramatically when I bedded the action and about 1" of the barrel. Lil Gun and 40 gr VMax work awesome

See video for bedding a 77/22 hornet.
